A Global Fee Shake-Up
On July 1, 2026, Japan implemented its first major visa fee revision in nearly five decades, creating waves in the global travel community. For most foreign nationals who require a visa, the cost increased dramatically, by as much as five times the original
price. A standard single-entry visa, which used to be around JPY 3,000, jumped to JPY 15,000 (approximately ₹8,700). Similarly, the fee for a multiple-entry visa soared from JPY 6,000 to JPY 30,000 (around ₹17,500). This significant hike was attributed to rising administrative costs and bringing fees in line with other major nations after almost 48 years at the same level. For travellers from many countries, this suddenly made a trip to Japan considerably more expensive before they even booked a flight.
The Good News for Indian Travellers
Here is the crucial piece of information for anyone holding an Indian passport: you are exempt from this massive fee hike. Thanks to a bilateral agreement between India and Japan, Indian citizens continue to benefit from a special, much lower fee structure. While travellers from other nations are now grappling with significantly higher costs, the path to Japan for Indians remains remarkably affordable from a visa perspective. This exemption was confirmed by the Embassy of Japan in India, making it clear that the new global fee structure does not apply to Indian nationals applying from India. This decision underscores Japan's growing interest in attracting more visitors from India.
So, What Is the Real Cost?
Let's break down the actual, current cost for an Indian citizen applying for a Japanese tourist visa. The consular visa fee set by the Embassy of Japan remains just INR 500. This incredibly low fee applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry visas, offering fantastic value. On top of this, you must pay a mandatory service charge to VFS Global, the official partner that processes the applications. This service fee is INR 800 per application. Therefore, the total mandatory cost you will pay is INR 1,300. Compared to the visa costs for many other long-haul destinations, this makes Japan one of the most accessible countries for Indian tourists.
Beyond the Basic Fees
While the core cost is INR 1,300, it's wise to budget for a few other minor expenses that are part of the process. These 'hidden costs' aren't from the embassy but are part of the application journey. You will need recent passport-sized photographs that meet specific guidelines, which may require a visit to a photo studio. You will also need to print several documents, including your application form, flight bookings, hotel reservations, and bank statements. Furthermore, VFS Global offers optional services for an additional charge, such as courier services to have your passport returned to your home, or SMS updates on your application status. While not mandatory, these can add convenience and a small amount to your overall visa application budget.
Sticker, e-Visa, and Key Documents
Indian travellers have two main routes to apply: the traditional sticker visa submitted at a VFS Global centre or the newer Japan e-Visa system for eligible single-entry tourist applications. Regardless of the method, the process requires careful documentation. You will need a valid passport, a completed application form, proof of sufficient funds through recent bank statements, tax documents, a detailed day-by-day itinerary, and confirmed flight and hotel bookings. The key to a successful application is meticulous preparation. Ensuring every document is in order and that your finances clearly show you can support your trip is far more important than the modest application fee.
