Tired of the traffic jams and packed Mall Roads of Shimla and Nainital? The Himalayas near Delhi offer more than just the usual suspects. For those craving quiet trails and pristine views, a different kind of hill getaway awaits.
Chakrata: The Secluded Cantonment
Nestled in Uttarakhand's
Jaunsar region, Chakrata is a quiet cantonment town that feels like a world away from commercial tourism. At an altitude of about 2,118 metres, it is blanketed by dense coniferous forests, offering a serene environment for nature lovers. Because it's a cantonment area, access is restricted for foreign nationals, which helps maintain its tranquil atmosphere. The drive from Delhi is approximately 320-330 kilometres and takes around 8-9 hours. The journey itself is scenic, especially the final stretch through Vikasnagar and Kalsi. Key attractions include the majestic Tiger Falls, one of the highest direct waterfalls in India, and Chilmiri Neck, the highest viewpoint in Chakrata offering breathtaking sunset views and a panoramic look at the Himalayan peaks. For the more adventurous, the ancient Budher Caves provide a fascinating exploration opportunity.
Binsar: A Wildlife Haven with Grand Vistas
If your idea of a perfect mountain holiday involves wildlife, birdsong, and spectacular Himalayan panoramas, Binsar is your destination. Located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the main attraction is the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. This protected forest of oak and rhododendron is home to diverse fauna, including over 200 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The highlight of Binsar is Zero Point, the highest vantage point within the sanctuary. A short trek to this spot rewards you with a stunning 300-km, 360-degree view of majestic peaks like Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, and Trishul. Situated around 400 km from Delhi, the best way to reach is by taking a train to Kathgodam (the nearest railway station, 105 km away) and then hiring a taxi. The sanctuary has limited stay options, including a government-run rest house, which ensures it never feels crowded.
Fagu: Shimla's Quiet, Fog-Kissed Neighbour
Located just 18-20 kilometres beyond the hustle of Shimla, Fagu is a peaceful hamlet that offers the same Himachali charm without the crowds. Its name is believed to be derived from the word 'fog', as it is often enveloped in a mystical white mist. Situated at an altitude of 2,500 metres, Fagu is surrounded by apple orchards and dense forests, making it ideal for leisurely nature walks and trekking. It serves as a great base for exploring nearby attractions like Kufri and Chail, but its real appeal lies in its tranquility. The journey from Delhi is about 360-370 km. The easiest way is to drive to Shimla and then continue for another 45 minutes. Visitors can enjoy the serene environment, walk through potato fields, and on clear days, soak in views of the snow-clad Himalayan ranges. It's the perfect spot for those who want to disconnect and unwind.
Naukuchiatal: The Nine-Cornered Lake
While Nainital and Bhimtal draw the majority of tourists in the Kumaon lake district, the quieter Naukuchiatal offers a more relaxed lakeside experience. As the name suggests, this lake has nine corners, and local legend says that one who sees all nine at once attains nirvana. The lake, located about 320 km from Delhi, is larger and deeper than Nainital's and far less crowded. This makes it an ideal spot for activities like boating, kayaking, and fishing without the long queues. For thrill seekers, the surrounding hills offer excellent opportunities for paragliding. The best time to visit is between March–June and September–November, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. It’s a destination that perfectly balances serenity with a touch of adventure, making it a great alternative for families and couples.
