Understanding the Free Visa Initiative
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a pilot programme to boost tourism from one of its key international markets. Under this initiative, the cost of a UAE entry visa, which is approximately Dh285 ($77), will
be covered for up to 20,000 Indian travellers. The programme runs for a limited time, from August 1 to October 31, 2026. It's important to understand this is not a visa-free entry policy for all Indian passport holders. Rather, it is a targeted subsidy where the visa cost is waived for those who book a qualifying holiday package through specific channels. This means travellers still need to go through the standard visa application process, but the fee will be covered by the programme.
Who Is Eligible for the Offer?
The offer is exclusively aimed at Indian passport holders who are beginning their journey in India. To be eligible, your travel plans must meet a specific set of criteria that go beyond just nationality. The core requirements are designed to ensure visitors spend a minimum amount of time exploring the emirate. The key conditions are booking a package that includes both a return flight from India and a hotel stay in Abu Dhabi for at least three consecutive nights. Simply booking a flight to Abu Dhabi or reserving a hotel independently will not make you eligible for this offer. The entire holiday must be booked as a single package through an approved travel partner.
Qualifying Bookings: The Fine Print
The most crucial part of this offer is how you book your trip. Travellers cannot apply for the visa subsidy on their own. The booking must be made through a participating travel partner, which can be a traditional travel agency or an online travel platform that is part of the DCT Abu Dhabi programme. Before finalising your payment, it is essential to confirm with your travel provider that they are part of this specific initiative and that your package qualifies. The agency will then handle the visa process, either through a DCT-appointed destination management company (DMC) where the fee is covered directly, or by getting a reimbursement from DCT Abu Dhabi. Your booking confirmation should clearly state that the visa cost is waived under this promotional offer.
How to Secure Your Free Visa
The process for the traveller is straightforward, as the administrative work is handled by the travel agencies. The first step is to identify and contact a participating travel agency or online portal. From there, you will need to select a holiday package that meets the minimum three-night stay requirement in an Abu Dhabi hotel and includes your return airfare from India. Once you have chosen your qualifying package and provided the necessary travel documents, the travel partner will manage the visa application on your behalf. Since the programme is limited to the first 20,000 visas and runs only until October 31, 2026, it is advisable to book well in advance and confirm availability to avoid disappointment.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
This visa cost waiver significantly reduces the upfront cost of a family or group trip to Abu Dhabi. For a family of four, the savings would amount to over Dh1,100 ($308), making the destination much more accessible. The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi's broader strategy to attract more visitors and build on its record-breaking tourism numbers from the previous year. While this specific offer is for Indian tourists, the UAE has also expanded other visa options, including a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa for all nationalities and visa-on-arrival for citizens of several other countries, demonstrating a wider push to simplify travel to the emirates. For Indian travellers, this limited-time offer presents a perfect opportunity to explore Abu Dhabi's attractions, from its cultural landmarks to its theme parks and natural landscapes.
