From Government Monopoly to Open Market
For decades, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was the sole custodian of India's space ambitions. But a series of sweeping reforms, crystallised in the Indian Space Policy 2023, has opened the entire value chain to private enterprise. This
strategic pivot created the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) as a single-window agency to authorise and facilitate private space activities. The goal was to move beyond ISRO's role as a provider and enable non-governmental entities to build, own, and operate space assets. The result has been a dramatic expansion of India's private space ecosystem, which has grown from a handful of companies to over 450 in just six years, turning a government-led program into a dynamic, startup-driven industry.
The Trailblazers of Launch
The most visible sign of this new era arrived on July 18, 2026, when Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 became the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach orbit. Founded by former ISRO scientists, the Hyderabad-based startup's successful 'Mission Aagaman' marked a pivotal moment, making India only the third country after the U.S. and China with private orbital launch capability. This achievement wasn't just a technical victory; it was a powerful signal to investors and the world. Another key player, Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos, has pioneered the use of 3D-printed engines. Its Agnibaan rocket, powered by a single-piece, semi-cryogenic engine, successfully completed a sub-orbital test flight in May 2024 from its own private launchpad. This innovation drastically reduces manufacturing time, enabling rapid and flexible launch services for small satellites.
New Eyes in the Sky
Beyond the race to build rockets, a new generation of startups is focused on what those rockets will carry. Pixxel is building a constellation of the world's highest-resolution hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike standard cameras, these satellites capture data from across hundreds of spectral bands, revealing details invisible to the naked eye. This 'health monitor for the planet' can detect early signs of crop disease, pinpoint methane leaks, and track the effects of climate change with unprecedented precision. With several 'Firefly' satellites already in orbit and more launches planned, Pixxel is set to provide daily global coverage, feeding a torrent of actionable data to industries like agriculture, energy, and environmental management. Other companies like GalaxEye are also innovating, recently launching an advanced satellite that combines optical and radar imaging.
Fueling the Upstream and Downstream
The surge in space-tech has been powered by a significant influx of capital. Indian space startups have attracted nearly $390 million in funding in recent years, with IN-SPACe actively connecting domestic firms with global investors. The government has further catalysed this growth by establishing dedicated venture funds and liberalising foreign direct investment (FDI) rules. Skyroot Aerospace recently became the sector's first unicorn, crossing a billion-dollar valuation. This investment isn't just fueling 'upstream' activities like building rockets and satellites. It's also creating a boom in the 'downstream' market, where the data beamed from orbit is turned into valuable applications for everything from agriculture and urban planning to logistics and national security. This downstream segment currently accounts for the bulk of India's space economy, which is projected to grow from around $8.4 billion to over $40 billion by 2033.
