Book Well in Advance
This is the golden rule for Onam travel. With Thiruvonam falling on August 26 this year, demand for flights, trains, and buses has sent prices soaring. Data from August 22 showed airfares from Chennai to Kochi jumping from a normal of around ₹5,300 to over
₹14,800. Similarly, private bus fares from Bengaluru have surged from ₹1,800 to as high as ₹6,000. To avoid disappointment and inflated costs, booking your travel and accommodation several weeks, if not months, in advance is critical. Hotels, homestays, and especially houseboats in popular areas get fully booked quickly.
Utilise Special Transport Services
To manage the festive rush, both Indian Railways and state transport corporations operate special services. Southern Railway is running over 100 special trains to Kerala, more than double last year's count. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also announced numerous special interstate bus services from cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mysuru between August 18 and September 3. Keep an eye on official announcements and book these special services as soon as they are released, as even these fill up fast.
Explore Less-Crowded Destinations
While central hubs like Kochi, Thrissur, and Thiruvananthapuram are at the heart of the main celebrations, consider exploring alternative locations for a more relaxed experience. The hill station of Munnar offers a serene escape amidst tea plantations, while still hosting local festivities. Coastal areas in North Kerala or the quieter backwaters of Kumarakom can be excellent alternatives to the bustling crowds of Alleppey. Exploring these regions allows you to enjoy the festive spirit without the peak-season pressure.
Plan Around Key Festival Dates
A little research into the Onam schedule can transform your trip. The Kerala Tourism department's official Onam Week runs from August 24 to 30, 2026, with many cultural events focused in Thiruvananthapuram. If you want to witness the famous Pulikali (Tiger Dance), you must be in Thrissur on August 29. For the iconic Aranmula Boat Race, you'll need to be near the Pamba River on August 30. Structuring your itinerary around these specific events ensures you don't miss the cultural highlights.
Embrace Homestays for an Authentic Experience
For a truly immersive Onam, consider booking a stay at a local homestay. This not only provides an alternative to often-overbooked hotels but also offers a chance to experience the festival's traditions firsthand. Many homestay hosts prepare an authentic Onam Sadhya (the grand vegetarian feast) and can guide you to the best local celebrations. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to witness the making of Pookalams (floral carpets) and understand the cultural significance of the festival from those who celebrate it.
Book Your Onam Sadhya in Advance
The Onam Sadhya is a culinary highlight you cannot miss. This elaborate vegetarian feast, served on a banana leaf, can feature over 20 different dishes. During the festival, popular restaurants and hotels that serve authentic Sadhya are packed. To avoid long waits or missing out entirely, it’s wise to research reputable places and make a reservation in advance, especially for Thiruvonam day. Some places even offer takeaway Sadhya kits, which can be a convenient option.
Pack for Humid Weather and Rain
Onam falls towards the end of the monsoon season in Kerala. While the heaviest rains have passed, you should still expect warm, humid days with occasional showers. The landscape is at its most lush and green during this time. Pack light cotton clothing to stay comfortable in the humidity, but also include a light rain jacket or an umbrella for unexpected downpours. Comfortable, waterproof footwear is also a sensible choice for navigating crowded streets and varied terrain.
