The Paradox in Numbers
On the surface, the figures seem to tell two different stories. The Ministry of Education recently informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 342 technical institutions approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have closed across the country
over the last three years. The number of closures has even accelerated, with 83 shutting in the 2024-25 cycle, 124 in 2025-26, and 135 in 2026-27. States like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh have seen the highest number of closures. But in that same period, student enrolment has not just been stable; it has surged. Admissions rose from approximately 22.11 lakh in 2023-24 to nearly 29.58 lakh by 2025-26, pointing to a robust and growing demand for technical education.
Why Are So Many Colleges Closing?
The closures are not a sign that students are losing interest in engineering or technical fields. Rather, they signal a flight to quality and relevance. The institutions shutting down are largely those that have failed to keep pace with industry demands and student expectations. For years, many second and third-tier private colleges struggled with significant issues, including low admission rates, a shortage of qualified faculty, outdated infrastructure, and poor graduate employability. Many of these institutions were simply not providing the education that leads to a good job. The AICTE allows for the voluntary or 'progressive' closure of such institutions, a process that stops new admissions but allows existing students to complete their studies. It is a market correction that has been long overdue, pruning the ecosystem of underperforming entities.
The Great Shift in Student Demand
So, where are all the new students going? The answer lies in a dramatic shift in course preferences. The era of students blindly opting for traditional engineering streams like mechanical or civil engineering is fading. Today’s aspirants are targeted and pragmatic, flocking to courses with clear and immediate career prospects. Enrolment is booming in fields like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Robotics. Students and their parents are now more aware, evaluating colleges based on their placement records, industry connections, and modern curricula. The rising enrolment numbers reflect this concentrated demand for future-focused skills, rather than a general increase across all available seats. This is less about more engineers and more about the right kind of engineers.
A Calculated Strategy, Not a Crisis
The concurrent trends of closures and growth are, in part, a result of a deliberate strategy by the AICTE. The regulatory body has been actively encouraging institutions to adapt to the changing job market. This includes giving colleges the flexibility to close down underperforming or unpopular courses and, crucially, to start new programs in emerging, high-demand areas. By streamlining the approval process for modern courses while facilitating the shutdown of failing colleges, the AICTE is actively curating the educational landscape. The goal is to improve the overall quality and employability of graduates, ensuring that the supply of technical talent aligns with the needs of India's rapidly growing digital economy.
