The Legendary Konkan Coast

The Blue Mountain Marvel
Climbing into the clouds, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a journey back in time. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this 'toy train' travels from Mettupalayam up to the hill station of Ooty. The vintage blue and cream coaches are pulled by a steam locomotive on the steepest sections, chugging slowly through dense eucalyptus forests, verdant tea plantations, and deep, misty valleys. The slow pace allows you to soak in the scenery and the crisp mountain air. The route features 208 curves and 16 tunnels, offering an intimate and charming experience. For a fare that is remarkably low for a heritage experience, this journey offers a tranquil and nostalgic escape into the heart of the Nilgiris, making it a favourite for nature lovers and romantics alike.
An Eastern Ghats Spectacle
The Western Ghats may get much of the attention, but the Eastern Ghats offer their own unique and stunning rail adventure from Visakhapatnam to the Araku Valley. This route is best experienced in a Vistadome coach, which features large glass windows and a transparent roof, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The train climbs through the Ananthagiri hills, passing through coffee plantations, thick forests, and 58 tunnels. The landscape here is rugged and dramatic, with deep gorges and towering peaks often shrouded in mist. The journey provides a thrilling perspective on a less-explored but equally majestic part of India's highlands. In fact, the Visakhapatnam-Araku Vistadome route was recently named India's top rail tourism route in a national survey.
The Matheran Monsoon Magic
For a shorter but no less magical trip, the narrow-gauge railway to Matheran is a perfect choice, especially for those near Mumbai. As Asia's only car-free hill station, Matheran offers a unique sense of peace. The toy train, when operational during the monsoon, winds its way through 21 kilometres of dense, green forest. The route is famous for its sharp, winding curves, which locals call the 'one-kiss-points'. During the rains, the forest is at its most vibrant, with small streams and waterfalls appearing along the way. The air becomes heavy with the scent of wet earth as clouds drift across the tracks, creating an ethereal and deeply refreshing experience for a very small price. Note that the main line from Neral is often suspended for safety during peak monsoon, so it's wise to check the status before planning.
