Planning an overnight train journey? Indian Railways has renewed its focus on a crucial safety rule: charging points for phones and laptops will be switched off between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Here’s what you need to know about this important measure.
The Rule Re-Enforced
Indian
Railways has directed all its zones to strictly enforce the shutdown of charging sockets in all coaches during a six-hour overnight window, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. While this may seem like a new inconvenience, the rule itself is not new. The Railway Board first introduced this safety protocol back in 2014 as a precautionary measure against fire incidents. The latest push for strict compliance, confirmed in a letter dated October 26, 2026, comes after recent events highlighted the risks of unattended overnight charging. Railway authorities have also instructed staff to conduct surprise inspections to ensure the rule is being followed without exception.
Why Safety is the Top Priority
The primary driver for this restriction is fire safety. The decision to re-emphasize the rule was prompted by a recent incident on a South Eastern Railway train where a passenger's power bank exploded while charging, filling the coach with smoke. According to the Railway Board, this occurred because onboard staff had failed to switch off the power points during the restricted hours. Incidents involving overheating electronics are a serious concern in the enclosed environment of a train coach, especially when passengers are asleep. Faulty batteries, defective chargers, or even devices left under pillows or blankets can overheat and lead to a 'thermal runaway'—a rapid temperature increase that can cause smoke, fire, and even explosions. This risk, coupled with past fires on trains linked to electrical faults, makes the overnight charging ban a critical safety protocol.
A History of Precaution
The origins of this rule trace back to a fire on the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express in 2013. Following that incident, the Commissioner of Railway Safety recommended in 2014 that charging points in AC coaches be switched off at night. The Railway Board then established the 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. window, balancing safety with passenger convenience. Over the years, similar recommendations were made for non-AC sleeper coaches after other fire incidents, such as one on a Humsafar Clone Special in November 2023. The recent directives aim to ensure this long-standing rule is universally and consistently applied across all train coaches to mitigate risks that also include the potential for theft of devices left charging unattended overnight.
What This Means For Your Journey
For the millions of passengers who rely on trains for overnight travel, this rule requires a slight adjustment in habits. The most practical solution is to ensure all your electronic devices—phones, laptops, and power banks—are fully charged before you board the train or before the 11 p.m. cutoff. It's advisable to carry a fully charged power bank with you, but not to charge the power bank itself using the train's sockets overnight. The restriction only applies to the power sockets; you can still use your devices during the night. Power to the charging points is expected to be restored after 5 a.m., so you can plug in your devices in the morning.
