A Festival with a Uniquely Dehradun Vibe
Forget cavernous, impersonal exhibition halls. The Doon Book Festival, held at Dehradun's Parade Ground, offers a distinctly different atmosphere. Organized by the National Book Trust in collaboration with the Uttarakhand government, this event is as
much about its scenic backdrop as it is about the books on display. The nine-day festival transforms the heart of the city into a sprawling hub for readers, writers, and artists, creating an immersive experience that feels both grand and accessible. With free entry for all, the event is designed to foster a genuine love for reading by welcoming everyone from serious bibliophiles to curious families.
More Than Just Books
While lakhs of books across hundreds of stalls form the core of the festival, its true energy comes from the diverse programming that runs alongside it. A major component is the Doon Lit Fest, which features a packed schedule of panel discussions and interactive sessions with renowned authors, filmmakers, scholars, and public intellectuals. Recent editions have hosted figures like filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, drawing huge crowds. Evenings come alive with cultural performances, including concerts by folk artists like Narendra Singh Negi and fusion bands, ensuring a festive atmosphere from morning till night.
A Celebration of Local and National Voices
The festival shines a powerful spotlight on regional literary traditions. A significant effort is made to promote local languages, with the formal release of books translated into Garhwali and Kumaoni. Discussions on the challenges and importance of translation and multilingual writing are a key feature, alongside poetry recitations by local writers. This focus on regional culture provides a unique platform for over 50 Garhwali and Kumaoni authors to connect with a broader audience, ensuring that the literary conversation is inclusive and representative of the area's rich heritage.
An Interactive Space for All Ages
What truly sets the Doon Book Festival apart is its commitment to engaging every visitor. A dedicated children's pavilion is a hive of activity, with storytelling, puppetry, art workshops, and dance-based exercises designed to spark creativity in young minds. Parallel sessions for teachers focus on innovative teaching methods, extending the festival's impact into the classroom. For the digitally savvy, an Instagram content contest encourages creative expression, blending the traditional love of books with modern social media culture. It’s this thoughtful, multi-generational approach that creates a shared sense of community and discovery.
