When Assistance Becomes Substitution

This is the murky middle ground where university policies are still evolving. Some institutions might allow this with proper disclosure, while others may forbid it. The key principle often cited is that the student bears full responsibility for the submitted content, regardless of how it was generated. Because there is no single rule, the safest approach for students is to always check their specific university, faculty, and even course-level guidelines. When in doubt, ask your professor directly.
How Universities Are Adapting
Universities are responding to the rise of AI in two major ways. First, many are adopting sophisticated AI detection tools like Turnitin's AI indicator to identify machine-generated text in student submissions. However, educators recognise that a technological arms race is not the solution. The more sustainable approach involves redesigning assessments to be more AI-resistant. This means moving away from traditional essays and exams that test recall and toward tasks that require higher-order thinking. Examples include in-class presentations, lab work, personal reflections, and project-based learning where the process is as important as the final product. The goal is to create assignments where AI provides little advantage because the work is inherently personal and process-oriented.
