What is the New Rule?
Effective September 15, 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without a visa for a period of up to 30 days. This is a change from the previous temporary scheme which allowed for a 60-day stay. The key takeaway is simple:
visa-free travel for Indians continues, but the duration has been standardized to 30 days. This policy change moves India from the previous Visa on Arrival system to a formal 30-day visa exemption scheme, alongside 59 other countries. The Thai government stated the revisions aim to support national security and streamline immigration benefits.
Who Does This Affect?
This rule change applies to all Indian citizens holding a valid passport who are travelling to Thailand for tourism. If you were planning a short holiday, a family trip, or a business visit of less than 30 days, your plans are largely unaffected. However, for those intending longer stays, such as for extended vacations or work-cations, this change is significant. It's important to note that travellers who entered Thailand on or before September 14, 2026, were granted a stay under the old 60-day rule, and that duration remains valid until the date stamped in their passport.
Documents You Still Need
While you don't need a pre-approved visa sticker, 'visa-free' does not mean document-free. Immigration officials at the border have the final say. All travellers must carry a passport with at least six months of validity from the date of arrival. You should also be prepared to present a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, proof of accommodation, and a clear itinerary. Additionally, every non-Thai citizen must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival. This is free and generates a QR code you'll need to show at check-in and upon arrival.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
A crucial requirement that travellers must not overlook is the proof of funds. Thai authorities require visitors to have sufficient money for their stay. Specifically, individuals should be prepared to show 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately INR 47,000) per person, or 40,000 Baht per family. While not every traveller is checked, immigration officers can randomly ask for this proof, and it's recommended to carry this amount in cash. Failure to provide this can result in being denied entry.
Planning a Stay Longer Than 30 Days?
If your travel plans exceed the 30-day limit, you must apply for an appropriate visa before you travel. The Royal Thai Embassy advises Indian passport holders wanting to stay longer to apply for the correct Thai e-Visa through the official online system. Attempting to work or engage in non-tourist activities on a visa exemption is illegal. For those already in Thailand who wish to stay longer, it may be possible to request a one-time extension of up to 30 additional days from a local immigration office, though approval is not guaranteed.
