From Keywords to Conversations
The old way of travel planning was a game of keywords. You would type “Goa beach resorts” or “budget hotels in Rajasthan” into a search bar and sift through pages of generic results. The process was tedious and often impersonal. Artificial intelligence,
specifically generative AI, is changing this dynamic entirely. Instead of rigid keywords, you can now have a conversation with an AI assistant. You can describe your ideal trip in natural language, like “Plan a 10-day family trip to Kerala and Tamil Nadu for six people, including my elderly parents and two children. We need vegetarian-friendly hotels, minimal driving between cities, and a mix of cultural sites and relaxing activities.” The AI can understand this complex request and generate a customised itinerary in seconds.
AI Curated for the Indian Traveller
The real power of this technology lies in its ability to cater to the specific nuances of Indian travel. AI platforms are being designed to understand multi-generational family dynamics, the need for specific dietary requirements like Jain or pure-vegetarian food, and the complexities of planning around school holidays and festivals. For instance, an AI can craft a kid-friendly itinerary with comfortable pacing for older family members, suggest appropriate clothing for temple visits, and even find restaurants that please everyone. Leading Indian online travel agencies (OTAs) like MakeMyTrip and Ixigo have partnered with AI leaders like OpenAI to integrate these conversational tools directly into their apps. MakeMyTrip's assistant, Myra, handles over 50,000 conversations daily in eight Indian languages, with a significant portion of queries coming from Tier-2 and smaller cities, highlighting the technology's broadening reach.
The Rise of the AI Co-Pilot
This new wave of AI isn't just a search tool; it’s becoming a full-fledged travel co-pilot. Beyond just booking flights and hotels, these platforms can create detailed, day-by-day schedules complete with sightseeing suggestions, restaurant reservations, and travel times. Some platforms, like Cleartrip, are using AI to manage complex logistics, flagging potential scheduling conflicts if a user changes one part of an expert-designed itinerary. The goal is to move from simply providing options to delivering a complete, bookable plan that turns inspiration into a confirmed trip with minimal friction. The technology is also expanding to in-trip assistance, with features like real-time language translation to break down barriers at local markets or restaurants.
The Human Element Is Not Disappearing
Despite the rapid advancements, the consensus in the industry is that AI is here to augment human expertise, not replace it. Many companies are pursuing a hybrid model, often described as “AI for logic, agents for magic.” While AI handles the heavy lifting of sorting through data, optimising routes, and managing logistics, human travel experts provide the creativity, cultural context, and emotional nuance that algorithms cannot yet replicate. Surveys show that while Indian travellers are eager to adopt AI, with 68% planning to use it for future trips, most still want the final say. They see AI as a powerful assistant for gathering recommendations and building an itinerary, but they prefer to maintain control over the final booking decisions.
Challenges on the Horizon
The road to a fully AI-driven travel future is not without its bumps. Key challenges in the Indian context include the digital divide, as high-speed internet is not yet accessible in all remote tourist destinations. There are also concerns about data privacy and the potential for AI models to have inherent biases or produce inaccurate information, known as 'hallucinations'. Furthermore, ensuring that AI promotes sustainable tourism by highlighting lesser-known destinations rather than just popular, overcrowded spots is a critical consideration for the industry. Addressing these issues will be crucial for the successful and equitable integration of AI in the Indian tourism sector.
