It might not sound like much, but the link between sleep and weight is backed by careful research. In recent controlled trials, scientists have explored what happens when people get less sleep than they need. One notable study found that when adults reduced
their sleep by about 80 minutes per night over six weeks, they gained an average of nearly half a kilogram. While that may seem small, it shows how even a mild, chronic sleep deficit can contribute to gradual weight gain over time. The issue isn't just that you are awake longer and have more opportunities to eat, although that is part of it. The research points to deeper, biological changes that occur when we are sleep-deprived.
Your Brain on Less Sleep
When you're tired, your brain doesn't just feel foggy; it actually makes different decisions. Sleep deprivation has been shown to dull activity in the frontal lobe, the part of your brain responsible for decision-making and self-control. At the same time, the brain's reward centers become more active. This combination is a recipe for trouble. It makes you more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks. Studies show that sleep-deprived individuals have stronger cravings for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods like sweets, salty snacks, and junk food. Essentially, your tired brain seeks a quick energy hit, and your weakened willpower has a harder time saying no.
A Tale of Two Hormones
Beyond brain activity, lack of sleep throws your body's key appetite-regulating hormones out of balance. Think of them as a 'go' and 'stop' system for hunger. Ghrelin is the 'go' hormone, produced in your stomach to signal hunger. Leptin is the 'stop' hormone, released from fat cells to tell your brain you're full. Multiple studies have shown that even a couple of nights of poor sleep can cause ghrelin levels to rise and leptin levels to fall. This hormonal shift leaves you feeling hungrier than usual and less satisfied after you eat, leading you to consume more calories than your body needs.
It’s Not Just About Food Intake
The impact of poor sleep doesn't stop at increasing your calorie intake. It also affects your energy expenditure. While you do burn a very small number of extra calories just by being awake longer, this is far outweighed by other effects. A key finding from recent studies is that sleep restriction leads to an increase in sedentary behaviour. People who slept less were more likely to be inactive during the day, with some studies noting an increase of nearly 30 minutes in sedentary time for men. This creates a double-edged sword: you consume more calories due to hormonal changes and brain activity, and you burn fewer calories because you're less active.
Simple Steps Toward Better Sleep
The good news is that sleep is a modifiable behaviour. Improving your sleep hygiene can have a positive ripple effect on your health. Start by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, to regulate your body's internal clock. Create a restful environment by making your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. It’s also crucial to manage your screen time; the blue light from phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals your brain it's time to sleep. Try to put devices away at least an hour before bed. Finally, avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, as all can disrupt your sleep quality.
