A Direct Link Between Two Key Cities
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on the Surat-Udaipur route establishes a much-needed, high-speed connection between two vital hubs. Surat, the diamond and textile capital, now has a direct premium train link to Udaipur, a global tourist destination.
This move, approved by the Railway Board, is set to significantly benefit travellers from Central and South Gujarat heading to Rajasthan, including business people, tourists, and families. The new service is not just a standalone addition; it replaces and extends a previous route, the Udaipur City-Asarva (Ahmedabad) Vande Bharat, providing a longer and more comprehensive connection. This makes it Surat's very first Vande Bharat Express, a milestone for the city.
Slashing Travel Time Significantly
Perhaps the most compelling advantage for any traveller is the significant reduction in journey time. The train is set to cover the approximately 690-kilometre distance in just seven hours and thirty minutes. This is a major improvement compared to existing travel options. By road, the journey typically takes between eight and ten hours, often longer depending on traffic conditions. Other trains on this route can take over eleven hours to complete the trip. The Vande Bharat, with a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, offers a faster and more reliable alternative, ensuring passengers reach their destination with time to spare.
The Onboard Vande Bharat Experience
Travelling on the Vande Bharat is an experience in itself, designed for comfort and modern convenience. The train features two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), both equipped with ergonomic, reclining seats. The executive class boasts 360-degree rotating seats, allowing passengers to face the direction of travel or socialise with their group. Large windows provide panoramic views of the passing landscape. Onboard amenities are similar to what one might find on an aircraft, including automatic plug doors, GPS-based passenger information screens, Wi-Fi, and mobile charging sockets for every seat. Hygiene is a priority, with bio-vacuum toilets and sensor-based taps. A well-regarded catering service is also available, ensuring a pleasant journey from start to finish.
Route, Stoppages, and Timings
The train will operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The schedule is designed for convenience. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. The return journey, train number 26904, will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. Along its route, the train will make nine key stops, enhancing connectivity for several towns and cities. The official stoppages are Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This network of stops ensures that the benefits of this high-speed service are distributed across the region.
Boosting Tourism and Business
The new Vande Bharat service is more than just a convenience for individual travellers; it's a strategic infrastructure upgrade expected to boost tourism and trade between Gujarat and Rajasthan. The easy and fast connectivity will likely encourage more weekend trips and short holidays to Udaipur, a city famous for its palaces, lakes, and as a popular destination for weddings. For the business community in Surat and surrounding areas, the train provides a comfortable and efficient mode of transport for meetings and trade opportunities in Rajasthan. This enhanced connection is anticipated to give a new impetus to social and economic relations between the two vibrant states.
