Know Your UPI Transaction Limits
Before you start your shopping spree, it’s crucial to understand your UPI transaction limits. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has set a standard daily limit of ₹1,00,000 for most users. However, this can vary significantly depending
on your bank. Most banks also impose a cap on the number of transactions you can make per day, which is often around 20. For specific categories like payments for insurance, capital markets, or educational institutions, the limits can be higher, sometimes up to ₹5 lakh. Check your UPI app or your bank's website to confirm your specific limits to avoid payment failures during crucial moments.
Create a Realistic Diwali Budget
Festive enthusiasm can easily lead to overspending. The most effective way to prevent this is by setting a clear budget before you begin shopping. Start by listing your essential monthly expenses and debt repayments to see what you can realistically afford to spend. Break down your Diwali budget into categories like gifts, decorations, new clothes, and food. A common approach is the 50/30/20 rule: 50% for must-haves, 30% for wants, and 20% as a buffer for unexpected costs. Having a plan helps you prioritise and prevents many small, impulsive purchases from adding up to a large, unmanageable total.
Strategise With Multiple Accounts or Apps
If you anticipate hitting your daily UPI limit, consider using a multi-account strategy. Linking more than one bank account to your primary UPI app allows you to switch between them once you reach the limit on one. Alternatively, having different UPI apps (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm) can sometimes provide flexibility, although the overall daily limit of ₹1,00,000 per bank account generally remains. For larger families or those planning significant purchases, splitting expenses across accounts can be a simple way to navigate the transaction caps and ensure your payments are not declined during peak shopping hours.
Stay Vigilant Against Festive Scams
The festive season is a prime time for online fraud. Scammers create fake shopping websites, send phishing links with unbelievable offers, and use QR code tricks to steal money. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) advises shoppers to always use official apps and websites and to avoid clicking on links from promotional emails or messages. Be extremely wary of messages offering free vouchers or cashback that ask for your UPI PIN or an OTP. Remember, you never need to enter your PIN to receive money. Always verify the recipient's name before completing a transaction and be suspicious of anyone creating a false sense of urgency.
Ensure Sufficient Account Balance
It may seem obvious, but one of the most common reasons for payment failure is an insufficient bank balance. During the busy festive period, it's easy to lose track of your spending. Before heading out for a big shopping day or sitting down for online sales, do a quick check of your linked bank account. Consider setting up low-balance alerts through your mobile banking app. Some people find it helpful to use a separate bank account specifically for holiday spending, transferring your budgeted amount into it beforehand. This not only helps stick to a budget but also ensures the funds are ready when you need them.
