For much of human history, our days were governed by the sun. We woke with its light and wound down as darkness fell. Today, our lives are illuminated by screens and artificial lighting, allowing us to work, socialise, and stay entertained long after

Its most powerful cue for synchronisation is light. When light enters your eyes, it sends a direct signal to the SCN, essentially telling it, “The day has started!” This single event sets the timing for dozens of other bodily functions, including when you’ll feel sleepy later that night.
The Power of Morning Sunlight
Not all light is created equal. The specific quality and intensity of early morning sunlight serve as the most effective signal for resetting your clock. When you step outside, this bright, natural light triggers two crucial hormonal responses. First, it tells your brain to halt the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. Second, it stimulates a healthy morning spike in cortisol. While cortisol is often called the “stress hormone,” a rise in the morning is essential for a healthy rhythm. This cortisol peak helps you feel awake, alert, and focused for the day ahead. This process is far more powerful than simply turning on your indoor lights; even on a cloudy day, the light outdoors is many times brighter and more effective at signaling your brain.
Setting a Timer for Better Sleep

By providing a clear “start” signal to your brain, the morning light exposure effectively sets a timer for your body to begin producing melatonin again approximately 12 to 16 hours later. This ensures that as evening approaches, your body naturally starts to wind down, making it easier to fall asleep. Without a strong morning light signal, the onset of nightly melatonin can become delayed and less robust. This is why you might feel “wired but tired” at night, unable to sleep despite feeling exhausted. A consistent morning light habit reinforces this cycle, leading to more predictable sleepiness and better sleep quality.
How to Build the Ten-Minute Habit
Making this work for you is remarkably simple. The goal is to get outside within 30 to 60 minutes of waking. The headline’s “ten minutes” is an excellent starting point. On a bright, clear day, experts suggest that 5 to 10 minutes is sufficient. If it's overcast, you should aim for 15 to 20 minutes to get a similar effect. The key is to get the light into your eyes, so leave the sunglasses behind for this short period. You don’t need to stare directly at the sun; just being outside with your eyes open is enough. Trying to get this light through a car windshield or an office window significantly reduces its effectiveness, as the glass filters out the crucial wavelengths your brain needs. You can pair the habit with something you already do, like drinking your morning coffee on the porch, walking the dog, or simply standing outside for a few moments before your day begins.
