A New Era for a Key Corridor
Indian Railways is preparing to launch the nation's second Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, connecting two of its largest economic hubs: Mumbai and Bengaluru. The service has a proposed inaugural run on November 1, 2026, to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava.
This new train is not just another addition to the timetable; it represents a major upgrade for overnight travel on a route that has long demanded a faster option. Currently, the journey by trains like the Udyan Express can take around 22 to 24 hours. The new sleeper service aims to cut this down dramatically, ushering in a new era of semi-high-speed overnight connectivity for southern and western India.
Slashing Hours, Not Just Minutes
The headline promise of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper is a significant reduction in travel time. The new service is expected to complete the approximately 1,118-kilometre journey in about 16 hours. This would shave off anywhere from six to eight hours compared to existing services, a substantial saving for business travellers, students, and families. Tentative schedules suggest an overnight departure from both cities, allowing passengers to travel while they sleep and arrive at their destination the next morning or afternoon. The service is expected to run six days a week. While the trainsets are designed for speeds up to 160 kmph, the actual average speed will be around 67 kmph due to existing track infrastructure limitations.
The Route and Its Connections
The train will connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with KSR Bengaluru station. Crucially, the route goes via Pune, a major IT and industrial hub that will benefit immensely from this enhanced connectivity. The planned stops include several important cities across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, such as Kalyan, Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal, and Anantapur. This strategic routing not only links the two megacities but also improves connectivity for a string of other urban centres along the way, potentially boosting regional economic activity.
What to Expect Onboard
This service utilises the new Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, which are a significant upgrade from conventional mail and express trains. Developed by BEML, these trains are designed with passenger comfort and modern amenities in mind for long-distance journeys. The train will be fully air-conditioned and is expected to have 16 coaches, comprising AC First Class, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier configurations, with a total capacity of around 823 berths. The focus is on providing a premium overnight travel experience, with features like cushioned berths and modern interior design aimed at making the long haul more comfortable.
From Proposal to Reality
While the headline uses the word 'proposed', recent announcements have moved the project firmly toward reality. Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna confirmed the November 1 launch, with the inaugural run expected to be flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. However, the date for the start of regular commercial services has not yet been formally announced. The fare structure is also pending official confirmation but is expected to be competitive. This service is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to modernise its network, which includes extensive track doubling and electrification projects like the Pune-Miraj-Londa line, infrastructure that is essential to support faster trains.
