The End of Visa-Free Travel
The most significant change for Indian passport holders is the end of the visa-free entry scheme that was in place since 2024. As of mid-2026, Thailand has reverted to a Visa on Arrival (VoA) system for Indians. This means that while you don't need to apply
for a visa from India for short trips, you will need to complete the VoA process upon landing in Thailand. This shift is part of a broader review of immigration policies aimed at tightening border controls. The Indian Embassy in Bangkok has issued a travel advisory urging nationals to be fully prepared for the new requirements to avoid any hassle at immigration.
Proof of Funds: The Cash Requirement
One of the most critical and frequently enforced checks is the requirement to show proof of sufficient funds. For travellers using the Visa on Arrival facility, immigration authorities may ask you to show at least 20,000 Thai Baht per person in cash. This is approximately ₹58,000. For a family, the requirement may be higher. It is crucial to note that credit cards or bank statements are often not accepted as a substitute; officers may specifically ask to see physical cash. While not every traveller is checked, you must be prepared for the possibility. Carrying the equivalent amount in another major currency like US Dollars or Euros is also generally acceptable.
Essential Documents for a Smooth Entry
Beyond cash, a complete set of documents is non-negotiable. Thai immigration officials will likely ask for a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. You must also present a confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing you intend to leave the country within the permitted stay period. Proof of accommodation, such as hotel booking confirmations for your entire stay, is another key requirement. Failing to have these documents ready is a common reason for travellers facing issues.
Don't Forget the Digital Arrival Card
A relatively new step in the process is the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). All foreign visitors are required to complete this form online within 72 hours before their arrival. After submission, you will receive a QR code. This code may be requested by immigration officials upon landing, so it's essential to have it saved on your phone or as a printout. This digital form is designed to streamline the entry process but overlooking it can cause unnecessary delays.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
To avoid any immigration surprises, treat this checklist as your final pre-flight routine. First, verify your passport has over six months of validity. Second, book and print your confirmed return flight ticket and all hotel accommodations. Third, complete the TDAC form online within the 72-hour window before you fly. Fourth, carry the required amount of cash (at least 20,000 THB or its equivalent per person). Finally, ensure you have the Visa on Arrival fee, which is around 2,000 THB (approximately ₹5,900), ready in cash. Having all these items organised in a folder can make the process at the immigration counter much faster and stress-free.
