A Faster, More Powerful Engine
The most significant upgrade is the website's sheer power. The new platform is designed to handle a much higher volume of users, especially during peak hours. It can now process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a massive leap from the previous
system's capacity of around 32,000. This increased capacity aims to reduce the frustrating website crashes and transaction failures that plagued users during Tatkal bookings. The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) has also been boosted to handle over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, up from just 4 lakh previously. This means faster results when you are checking seat availability or PNR status.
A Cleaner, Clutter-Free Interface
One of the most noticeable changes is the simplified design. The new interface is cleaner, with fewer distractions like flashing banners and unnecessary pop-ups that used to interrupt the booking flow. This streamlined layout helps you find important options quickly, making navigation much more intuitive. The goal was to remove the frustrating obstacles, such as repeated CAPTCHA verifications for routine bookings, that made the process feel like a chore. By decluttering the pages, the website not only looks better but also loads faster, even on slower internet connections.
See All Your Options on One Screen
Gone are the days of endlessly toggling between different classes to find an available seat. A major user-friendly update is the unified seat availability view. Now, you can see the availability across all classes—Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, and others—on a single screen. This small but significant change saves valuable time and clicks, allowing you to compare all your options at a glance and make a decision much more quickly. It streamlines the search process, letting you focus on choosing the best option rather than wrestling with the interface.
New Tools for Smarter Booking
The redesigned website introduces several new tools to empower travellers. For the first time, passengers can indicate their preferred seat or berth type during the booking process. While not a guarantee, it gives the system your preference. Another key addition is the fare calendar. Similar to airline booking sites, this feature allows you to compare ticket prices across a range of dates, helping you find more economical travel options if your schedule is flexible. These features provide more control and transparency, helping you plan your journey more effectively.
Simplified Payments and Pre-filled Details
Checking out is now a much smoother experience. The payment process has been streamlined, with a focus on improving transaction success rates, especially with popular options like IRCTC-iPay and UPI. For frequent travellers, the ability to save passenger details in a 'Master List' remains a huge time-saver. By creating a Master List in your profile, you can pre-fill passenger information with a single click, which is crucial for beating the clock during high-demand Tatkal bookings. This feature, combined with a faster checkout, significantly cuts down the time it takes to finalize a reservation.
More Inclusive and Accessible
The new website also aims to be more accessible to a wider range of users across India. It will support multiple Indian languages, making it easier for people who are not proficient in English to navigate the portal and book tickets. Furthermore, services for different groups, such as Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), students, and patients, which often required separate processes, are being integrated into the main platform. This move toward a single, unified portal is a significant step in making the national railway network's services accessible to all.
