The ₹500 Advantage
In a world of rising travel costs, Japan has offered a welcome surprise for Indian passport holders. While Japan announced a global hike in its visa fees effective July 1, 2026, the Embassy of Japan in India confirmed that the fee for Indians remains
unchanged. Indian citizens will continue to pay just ₹500 for both single-entry and multiple-entry tourist visas. This special concessional rate makes Japan one of the most affordable major destinations for Indians to get a visa for, creating a significant cost advantage. For comparison, other foreign nationals applying for the same visa in India now face charges of ₹8,650 for a single entry and ₹17,350 for a multiple-entry visa.
How to Apply for Your Japan Visa
Indian citizens planning a trip to Japan need to submit their applications through authorised VFS centres. The process is straightforward. While Japan introduced an e-visa system for Indians in April 2024, many travellers still use the standard application route. You will need a valid passport, a completed application form, photographs, proof of sufficient funds, and a detailed itinerary including flight and hotel bookings. It is advisable to apply up to three months before your planned travel date, as applications are generally not accepted earlier. Always check the official website of the Embassy of Japan in India or VFS Global for the most current document checklist and procedures, as service charges will apply in addition to the visa fee.
Why Japan's Allure is Growing
The affordable visa is just one part of a much bigger story. Tourism from India to Japan is booming, with visitor numbers seeing a remarkable 40% increase in 2024. This surge is fuelled by several factors, including better flight connectivity, with 26 direct flights per week now connecting Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to Japan. But the real draw is Japan itself—a country that offers a captivating mix of experiences. From the electric energy and pop culture of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, visitors can experience ancient heritage and dazzling modernity in one trip. The country's reputation for safety, cleanliness, and world-class public transport makes it incredibly welcoming for first-time visitors and families.
A Destination for Every Season
Japan’s appeal isn't limited to a single season, which is another reason for its growing popularity among Indian travellers who plan trips around school holidays and festivals. Spring (March-April) is famous for its iconic cherry blossoms, creating breathtaking landscapes across the country. Summer brings lush greenery and vibrant festivals. Autumn (October-November) offers a stunning display of fiery red and orange leaves. Winter attracts visitors with snow-covered landscapes perfect for skiing in places like Hokkaido. This year-round appeal means there is always a good time to visit, whether you're seeking cultural immersion, natural beauty, or urban exploration.
Planning Your Budget Beyond the Visa
While the visa is cheap, what about the trip itself? A trip to Japan is more affordable than many assume, especially with the Japanese Yen offering a favourable exchange rate against the rupee in recent times. A budget-conscious traveller can manage daily expenses for between ₹6,000 and ₹8,000. A mid-range trip, allowing for comfortable hotels, restaurant meals, and inter-city travel via the famous bullet trains (Shinkansen), might cost between ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000 per person for a 7-day trip. Booking flights 3-4 months in advance and travelling during the shoulder seasons (like October-November) can lead to significant savings on airfare, which is often the largest expense.
