Gujarat’s Answer to the Monsoon
Every year, as the monsoon rains breathe life into the country, Gujarat Tourism organises the Saputara Monsoon Festival, also known as Megh Malhar Parv. This month-long celebration, scheduled this year from late July to mid-August, aims to showcase the unique
beauty of Gujarat's only hill station, Saputara, located in the Dang district. The festival was envisioned to boost tourism, celebrate the region's rich tribal culture, and create local employment. Now a major attraction, it transforms the quiet hill station into a bustling hub of activity, drawing travellers from across the country seeking a unique rainy-season experience.
The Lush Landscape of Saputara
Nestled in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, Saputara sits at an altitude of about 1,000 metres. Its name translates to the 'Abode of Serpents', and the local tribal communities worship a snake image on the banks of the Sarpaganga river. During the monsoon, the region undergoes a dramatic transformation. The landscape, often called the Cherrapunji of Gujarat, becomes a canvas of lush green forests, misty hills, and gushing waterfalls, offering a refreshing escape from city life. The festival is centered around the picturesque Saputara Lake, which becomes a hive of cultural and recreational activities.
A Celebration of Culture and Art
The festival is a vibrant showcase of culture. A grand inaugural parade often kicks things off, sometimes featuring hundreds of artists from various states performing traditional folk dances like Lavani, Bhangra, and Bihu under the 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' theme. Throughout the festival, visitors can immerse themselves in a variety of activities. These include workshops on traditional Warli painting and bamboo crafts, a tribal food festival, and live folk music and dance performances at venues like Governor Hill. For those looking for hands-on experiences, there are opportunities to get tribal tattoos, shop for handmade crafts, and even try your hand at archery or paper craft.
Adventure and Activities for All
Beyond the cultural offerings, the Megh Malhar Parv is packed with activities for all ages. Adventure enthusiasts can participate in a 'Rain Run' marathon, go boating or water zorbing on Saputara Lake, or try ziplining and paragliding. The forest department also organises guided treks along scenic routes. Families can enjoy street magic shows, puppet shows, and various games. Themed selfie points are set up around the town for capturing memories, and a special Dahi Handi competition is often held during Janmashtami, adding to the festive fervour.
Exploring Beyond the Festival
While the festival is the main draw, Saputara and its surroundings offer plenty to explore. A ride on the Ropeway provides panoramic views of the town. Nature lovers can visit the stunning Gira Waterfalls, which are at their peak during the monsoon, or explore the Vansda National Park. Other popular spots include Sunrise Point and Sunset Point, the serene Lake Garden, and the Saputara Tribal Museum, which offers deeper insight into the local Dangi culture. For a touch of history, a visit to the Hatgadh Fort, located on the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, is a must.
