in the space sector. Developing a strong conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills at this stage is non-negotiable. Participating in science Olympiads, coding competitions, or even building small electronics projects can provide a valuable edge and foster an early innovative mindset.
The Direct Route: IIST
For those with a clear aim to work at ISRO, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram is the most direct gateway. This institution, run by the Department of Space, offers undergraduate courses like B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering and Avionics. Admission is highly competitive, requiring students to qualify through the JEE Advanced exam. Students who graduate from IIST with a high CGPA (typically 7.0 or above) are often eligible for direct recruitment into ISRO as a Scientist/Engineer 'SC', subject to vacancies.
The Broader Path: Key Degrees and Exams
Beyond IIST, a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Bachelor of Engineering (BE) is the most common qualification. Core disciplines in high demand include Aerospace, Mechanical, Electronics & Communication, and Computer Science Engineering. To secure a spot in premier institutions like the IITs and NITs, students must clear entrance exams like JEE Main and JEE Advanced. After graduation, one of the primary methods for recruitment into ISRO is through the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) exam, which consists of a written test and an interview. For some roles, a strong score in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) can also be an advantage.
