Kolkata: The Grand Epicentre
Kolkata’s Durga Puja is an emotion, a city-wide art festival that has even been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Here, the celebration transcends religion, becoming a carnival of creativity. Neighbourhoods compete to
create the most innovative and artistic pandals—temporary structures that house the idols—with themes ranging from historical monuments to contemporary social issues. The entire city transforms into a massive, open-air art gallery, with streets dazzling under elaborate light installations. Pandal-hopping is the primary activity, as millions of people, dressed in their finest, navigate the city to witness the breathtaking craftsmanship. The air buzzes with the rhythmic beats of the 'dhaak' (a traditional drum) and the fragrance of incense, creating an immersive experience of devotion and festivity.
Delhi: A Slice of Bengal in the Capital
In Delhi, the hub of Durga Puja celebrations is Chittaranjan Park, fondly known as CR Park. This neighbourhood, home to a large Bengali community, transforms into a 'mini Kolkata' during the festival. The story of Puja here began in the 1970s with settlers who were displaced from East Pakistan, making it a festival deeply rooted in community and heritage. The pandals at the Cooperative Ground, Mela Ground, and Kali Mandir are among the most famous, drawing huge crowds with their grand decorations and cultural programmes. The lanes become a food lover's paradise, with stalls selling authentic Bengali delicacies like puchkas, fish cutlets, and mishti doi. It's a celebration that offers both a spiritual connection and a rich cultural immersion for everyone.
Mumbai: Glamour, Themes, and Tradition
Mumbai celebrates Durga Puja with its own unique blend of tradition and Bollywood glamour. The city is known for its grand, thematic pandals that can rival film sets in their design and execution. Many pujas are organised by Bengali communities and are often visited by film celebrities. The North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja, backed by the Mukherjee family, is one of the most star-studded events, where you can often spot actors like Kajol and Rani Mukerji participating in the rituals and serving bhog (community feast). Other prominent pandals in areas like Lokhandwala, Andheri, and Shivaji Park also feature elaborate themes, stunning idols, and vibrant cultural evenings with performances by famous artists. This mix of devotion and spectacle makes Mumbai’s Puja a dazzling affair.
Bengaluru: A Cosmopolitan Community Affair
In the tech hub of Bengaluru, Durga Puja is a heartfelt, community-driven affair that reflects the city's cosmopolitan spirit. With a large and vibrant Bengali population, the city hosts over a hundred pujas. Celebrations in areas like Ulsoor, Koramangala, and Whitefield are known for their blend of traditional rituals with modern cultural events. The Ulsoor Bengali Association hosts one of the city's oldest pujas, cherished for its traditional vibe and authentic bhog. Many pandals in Bengaluru also showcase the cultural heritage of other communities, such as those from Odisha and Bihar, making it a true melting pot of festivities. It’s a celebration that beautifully merges Bengal's heritage with the inclusive ethos of southern India, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all.
Ahmedabad: Where Dhunuchi Meets Garba
In Ahmedabad, Durga Puja coincides with the exuberant festival of Navratri, creating a unique cultural fusion. While the city is famous for its high-energy Garba and Dandiya Raas nights, it also hosts traditional Durga Puja celebrations, organised mainly by the local Bengali community. The Ahmedabad Kalibari, run by the Bengal Cultural Association, holds the largest Durga Puja in Gujarat, attracting tens of thousands of people. Here, you can witness the mesmerising 'Dhunuchi Naach' (a devotional dance with incense burners) alongside the swirling colours of Garba. This creates a vibrant spectacle where the devotional intensity of eastern India mingles with the festive dance traditions of Gujarat, offering a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
