The New Vande Bharat Link
The much-awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is now operational, paving the way for direct, all-weather train connectivity to the Kashmir valley. As of August 2026, Indian Railways is running multiple Vande Bharat Express services between
Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Recently, a third Vande Bharat service was approved for this route, which will also include a stop at Udhampur, enhancing connectivity for travellers. These high-speed trains traverse the stunning landscape, including crossing the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, turning the nearly five-hour journey itself into a memorable experience. This development is a game-changer, making travel to Srinagar faster, more comfortable, and reliable year-round.
Picking the Perfect Season
Kashmir offers a different kind of magic in every season. Your ideal travel time depends on what you want to experience. Spring (March-May) is famous for its vibrant tulip festival and blooming gardens. Summer (June-August) is the peak tourist season, offering pleasant weather perfect for sightseeing and visiting popular spots like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Autumn (September-November) sees the valley painted in hues of gold and red, as the leaves of the Chinar trees turn. It’s a photographer's delight with fewer crowds. Winter (December-February) transforms Kashmir into a snowy wonderland, making it the best time for skiing and enjoying snowfall in Gulmarg.
Your Must-Do Itinerary
While Srinagar is the heart of your trip, don't miss its surrounding gems. In Srinagar, a stay on a traditional houseboat on Dal Lake and a sunset shikara ride are essential experiences. Explore the historic Mughal Gardens—Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh—and the spiritual Shankaracharya Temple. Plan day trips or overnight stays to Gulmarg, the 'Meadow of Flowers', to ride the famous Gondola, one of the world's highest cable cars. Pahalgam, the 'Valley of Shepherds', is perfect for serene walks along the Lidder River and visiting the picturesque Betaab and Aru valleys. Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold', offers stunning views of the Thajiwas Glacier.
Packing for the Valley
Packing for Kashmir requires careful thought due to its changing weather. Layering is key. For summer trips (May-August), pack light cottons for the day and a light jacket or woollens for the cooler evenings. If you're visiting in spring or autumn, light woollen sweaters and a windproof jacket are necessary. Winter travel (December-February) demands heavy woollens, thermal innerwear, a down jacket, snow boots, gloves, and caps to stay warm in sub-zero temperatures. Regardless of the season, always carry comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a basic first-aid kit.
Connectivity and Permits
A crucial point for travellers is mobile connectivity. Due to security regulations, prepaid SIM cards from other states often do not work in Jammu and Kashmir. It is highly recommended to carry a postpaid connection from major operators like Jio or Airtel, which generally offer reliable service in tourist areas. For most tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, no special permits are required for Indian citizens; however, always carry a valid government-issued photo ID. Permits may be needed for visiting certain remote or border areas like Gurez or parts of Ladakh, so check in advance if your itinerary includes off-beat locations.
