Plan Smart, Travel Far
A successful budget trip to the Northeast hinges on smart planning. The best time for backpackers to visit is during the shoulder seasons—March to May and October to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and you avoid the peak season rush,
which often means lower prices for accommodation and transport. While Meghalaya requires no special permits for Indian citizens, Arunachal Pradesh is a different story. You must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before you enter. Thankfully, the process is now streamlined. You can apply online through the official government portal, and approvals are often granted the same day during working hours. All you need is a government-issued ID and a passport-sized photograph. Planning this in advance saves you from last-minute hassles at entry check-posts.
Accommodation: Homestays and Hostels
The Northeast has a thriving homestay culture, which is a blessing for budget travellers. In both Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, staying with a local family is often cheaper than a hotel and offers an authentic experience. In places like Shillong, Cherrapunji, Ziro, and Tawang, you can find clean, comfortable homestays for a fraction of the cost of a traditional hotel. Shillong and Guwahati also have a growing number of backpacker hostels where a dorm bed can be very affordable. Expect to pay anywhere from ₹400 to ₹900 for a dorm bed or a basic homestay room, allowing you to save significantly. Booking ahead is wise, especially in popular spots like Mawlynnong or Nongriat.
Transport: The Shared Sumo is Your Best Friend
Transportation is often the biggest expense, but it doesn't have to be. The key is to travel like a local. Shared taxis, usually Tata Sumos or similar vehicles, are the backbone of inter-town travel in both states. These vehicles ply fixed routes, for example, from Guwahati to Shillong, Shillong to Cherrapunji, or Tezpur to Bomdila, and you pay per seat. This is significantly cheaper than hiring a private cab, which can cost several thousand rupees per day. For instance, a shared taxi from Guwahati to Shillong might cost around ₹500 per person, whereas a private cab could be upwards of ₹3,000. Be prepared for a cozy ride, as these jeeps tend to fill up, but it's an experience in itself and a great way to meet other travellers.
Eat Local, Save Big
One of the best ways to experience a new place is through its food, and in the Northeast, it’s also one of the best ways to save money. Avoid tourist-centric hotel restaurants where prices are inflated. Instead, dive into the local food scene. Small eateries and dhabas serve delicious and filling meals for very little. In Shillong, a plate of 'Jadoh' (rice cooked with meat) or a hearty thali at a local joint can be incredibly affordable. Look for small shops selling momos, soups, and other local snacks, which are both hygienic and tasty. A full meal at a local eatery will rarely set you back more than ₹150-₹200, allowing you to keep your daily food budget well under control.
Sightseeing on a Shoestring
The true beauty of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh lies in their natural landscapes, and thankfully, nature doesn't charge a hefty entrance fee. Many of the most iconic sights, like the Laitlum Canyons, numerous waterfalls, and serene hiking trails, are free to access. The trek to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat involves descending thousands of steps but costs nothing in entry fees. In Arunachal, the monasteries of Tawang and the valleys of Ziro are the main attractions, with minimal to no entry charges. Your primary cost will be the transport to get to these places. By relying on shared taxis or grouping up with fellow travellers at your hostel to split the cost of a day-trip cab, you can see the best of the region without splurging.
