India’s festive season is bringing more than just celebrations; it’s delivering a significant surge in employment. With hiring up 7% year-on-year, the job market is buzzing with over 1.27 lakh new openings for the 2026 festive period.
The Big Picture: A Festive Hiring Boom
The 7% growth in
festive hiring marks the third consecutive year of expansion, reflecting a strong build-up in India's consumption and fulfilment economy. This growth is particularly notable as it contrasts with an 11% decline in the overall white-collar job market, highlighting the concentrated power of festive spending. The primary drivers are the e-commerce, quick commerce, and logistics sectors, which are scaling up operations to meet the massive surge in consumer demand during the festive sales period that spans from Navratri through Diwali and the year's end. According to a report from foundit, this has resulted in 1,27,080 festive jobs this year, up from 1,18,750 in 2025.
Hotspot #1: Customer Support
As millions of Indians shop online, the need for robust customer support skyrockets. This has made customer service and experience roles a major hiring category, accounting for 14% of all festive jobs. Companies are racing to hire representatives to handle a flood of inquiries about orders, deliveries, payments, and returns. These are not just traditional call centre jobs; the roles now often involve omnichannel support across chat, email, and social media. Employers are looking for candidates with strong communication skills, digital literacy, and patience to manage the high volume of customer interactions. The demand is especially high for professionals who can offer support in multiple regional languages in addition to English.
Hotspot #2: Warehouse and Logistics
The backbone of any successful festive sale is a flawless supply chain, making warehouse and logistics roles the largest area of demand. Operations and fulfilment jobs account for 23% of festive hiring, with another 12% in supply chain and logistics. The boom in e-commerce and quick commerce has led to a 10-12% year-on-year increase in hiring within these sectors. Key roles in high demand include warehouse pickers and packers, sorters, inventory controllers, and last-mile delivery executives. Companies like Amazon and Flipkart are creating over a lakh seasonal opportunities each, expanding their networks of fulfilment centres and delivery hubs to ensure orders reach customers on time.
Who Is Hiring and Where?
The hiring spree is being led by quick commerce, e_commerce, and logistics giants. Quick commerce has seen the fastest growth, with an 18% rise in hiring. While metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai still account for the largest share of jobs, the most rapid growth is happening elsewhere. Tier_2 cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, and Coimbatore recorded an 11% growth in festive jobs, while smaller, emerging cities saw the fastest growth at 15%. This geographic shift shows that consumption and employment opportunities are becoming more widely distributed across the country, moving beyond the traditional urban centres.
What to Expect: Skills and Prospects
These festive jobs are predominantly temporary or gig_based roles, designed to handle a seasonal peak. The majority of hiring is focused on early_career professionals, with those having $0$-$3$ years of experience accounting for $43$% of the new roles. While the work is often temporary, it offers a crucial entry point into the workforce for many. However, estimates suggest that only about $25$% of these temporary hires may be converted into permanent positions. In terms of compensation, some reports indicate that workers with relevant, ready_to_deploy skills could command a wage premium of $12$-$18$% as companies compete for talent in a compressed timeline.
