A Comforting Tradition
Kadha, a simple and potent herbal decoction, is the cornerstone of wellness in many Indian homes. It’s not just a drink; it’s a warm hug in a mug, a ritual passed down from grandmothers, and a first line of defence against seasonal ailments. While recipes
vary from family to family, the combination of ginger and tulsi (holy basil) is a classic pairing, celebrated for its powerful, synergistic properties that are especially beneficial when the air is damp and cool.
The Power of Ginger
Adrak, or ginger, is a non-negotiable ingredient in any potent kadha. Revered in Ayurveda for its warming (ushna) properties, it’s a powerhouse of benefits. The active compound, gingerol, gives it its pungent flavour and is responsible for many of its medicinal effects. Ginger is widely known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s traditionally used to soothe a sore throat, reduce nausea, aid digestion, and fight respiratory infections. A slice of fresh ginger in your kadha doesn't just add flavour; it helps stimulate the digestive fire (agni) and expel excess mucus, making it a formidable foe against the common cold.
Tulsi, The Queen of Herbs
No discussion of Indian wellness is complete without mentioning Tulsi. Considered a sacred plant, holy basil is classified as an adaptogen—a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress and promotes mental balance. But its benefits go far beyond that. Tulsi is rich in essential oils and compounds that have antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. This makes it particularly effective in preventing infections that are common during the monsoon. It is also an excellent expectorant, which means it helps clear mucus from the airways, providing relief from coughs and chest congestion. Adding a few fresh leaves to your brew imparts a distinct, calming aroma and a wealth of immune-supporting benefits.
The Perfect Monsoon Brew
What makes this combination the ultimate monsoon hero? The season’s dampness and fluctuating temperatures can weaken our immune system, making us susceptible to viral and bacterial infections. The ginger in the kadha provides warmth and fights inflammation, while the tulsi builds immunity and tackles pathogens. Together, they create a holistic brew that addresses the root causes of monsoon-related discomfort. It’s a proactive way to support your body’s natural defences, keeping you feeling strong and energetic even when it’s grey and pouring outside.
How to Make Your Own Kadha
Making this wellness brew at home is incredibly simple. You don’t need exact measurements; feel free to adjust the ingredients to your taste. **Ingredients:** - 2 cups of water - 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated or crushed - 8-10 fresh tulsi leaves - 4-5 black peppercorns, lightly crushed (optional) - 2 cloves (optional) - 1 teaspoon of honey or jaggery (to taste, add at the end) **Instructions:** 1. In a small saucepan, add the water, grated ginger, tulsi leaves, and optional peppercorns and cloves. 2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. 3. Once it’s boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. The goal is to reduce the liquid to about half its original volume to concentrate the flavours and compounds. 4. Strain the kadha into a mug. 5. Let it cool slightly before stirring in honey or jaggery, as boiling heat can diminish honey's beneficial properties. 6. Sip slowly while it's warm.
