The popular travel route between Bengaluru and Goa is getting a major upgrade. A new Vande Bharat Express has been sanctioned, promising to cover the distance in about 13 hours, offering a comfortable and scenic alternative to existing options.
Introducing the Yesvantpur-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express
The Indian
Railway Board has officially approved the introduction of the Yesvantpur-Madgaon-Yesvantpur Vande Bharat Express. This new semi-high-speed, chair-car service will directly connect Karnataka's tech hub with Goa's popular coastal towns. The launch of this train follows the recent completion of electrification work along the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway route, which has enabled the operation of faster services. Expected to begin operations in the third week of November 2026, this new train aims to provide a much-needed, reliable daytime travel option between the two states.
Route, Schedule, and Timings
The service is scheduled to run six days a week in each direction. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur (Bengaluru) at 7:35 AM and is scheduled to arrive at Madgaon (Goa) at 8:55 PM, making the journey approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes long. This service will operate every day except for Wednesdays. For the return journey, train number 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, with a slightly shorter travel time of 12 hours and 55 minutes. This leg of the journey will run six days a week, excluding Thursdays. The train will travel via Mangaluru Junction, with 12 stops planned along the route, including Hassan, Sakleshpur, Udupi, Karwar, and Mangaluru Junction.
A Journey Through the Western Ghats
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its route. The train will pass through the stunning landscapes of the Western Ghats, particularly on the scenic stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road. Passengers will be treated to views of lush greenery, rolling hills, and picturesque valleys, turning the long journey into a memorable part of the travel experience itself. This provides a significant advantage over overnight buses or flights, offering a comfortable and visually engaging way to travel. The service will feature the standard modern amenities of the Vande Bharat Express, including reclining seats, onboard catering, and large windows to enjoy the view.
How It Compares: Train vs. Bus vs. Flight
This new 13_hour train journey finds a sweet spot between speed, cost, and comfort. Currently, the fastest existing trains, like the Yesvantpur Vasco Da Gama Express (17309), can take anywhere from 12 to 16 hours. While a flight is the quickest option, taking just over an hour in the air, total travel time increases when factoring in airport transfers, check_in, and security, and costs are significantly higher, especially without advance booking. Overnight buses are a popular budget choice, with travel times ranging from 12 to 14 hours, but often lack the comfort and scenic advantages of a daytime train journey. The Vande Bharat aims to compete directly with these buses on time while offering a superior level of comfort and a unique travel experience.
Booking and Fare Information
While the service has been approved, the official launch date and fare details have not yet been announced by Indian Railways as of early November 2026. Once bookings open, tickets for the Yesvantpur–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express will be available through the official IRCTC website, the mobile app, and authorized ticket counters. Given the popularity of the route, especially during peak holiday seasons, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance once they become available. The introduction of this service will also lead to the discontinuation of the existing Madgaon–Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express, as its rake will be utilized for this new extended route.
