The Critical Name Check
The single most important detail is the passenger's name. For any travel within India, the name on your ticket must exactly match a government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar card, PAN card, or passport. This isn't just about a minor typo; security officials
at airports and Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) on trains are required to verify that the person travelling is the person on the ticket. Things to watch for include: ensuring your first name and surname are not swapped, checking for misspellings, and making sure the name format matches your ID. For example, if your ID says "Rohit Kumar Sharma" but your ticket says "Rohit Sharma," it can create a problem. For international travel, the name must align perfectly with your passport.
Verify Age and Gender
While the name is paramount, other personal details like age and gender are also crucial, particularly for Indian Railways. The railways offer fare concessions for senior citizens and children, which are linked to the age you provide during booking. If a TTE finds a discrepancy between the age on the ticket and the age on your ID, you could be penalised. The penalty often involves paying the full fare difference and an additional fine. Similarly, gender is used for allocating seats under specific quotas, like the Ladies Quota (LD) in trains. An incorrect entry can lead to complications during your journey, so a quick confirmation of these details before payment is a necessary step.
Double-Check Dates and Destinations
It sounds obvious, but booking a ticket for the wrong date or in the wrong direction is a surprisingly common mistake. In a rush, it's easy to select the 25th instead of the 26th or book a ticket from Delhi to Mumbai when you meant to travel the other way around. Correcting a date error can be costly. Many airlines and even Indian Railways may require you to cancel the incorrect ticket (often with a cancellation fee) and book a new one at the prevailing, potentially higher, fare. Before you click 'pay', take five seconds to re-read the origin, destination, date of travel, and departure time. This simple habit can save you from significant financial loss and the stress of last-minute rebooking.
Understand Your Ticket Type
For train journeys in India, the ticket form includes details about the travel class (like Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC) and the quota under which it was booked (like General, Tatkal, or Premium Tatkal). Ensure these match your requirements. Booking under the Tatkal quota, for instance, comes with stricter rules for cancellation and refunds. For flights, check the fare rules. Many cheaper tickets are non-refundable or carry a hefty fee for any changes. India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, has rules that allow for corrections of minor spelling errors within 24 hours of booking without a fee, but this applies under specific conditions, so it's always better to get it right the first time.
What If You Spot an Error?
If you do find a mistake after booking, the course of action depends on the ticket type. For airline tickets, contact the airline or your travel agent immediately. Minor spelling corrections of up to three characters are sometimes allowed, though a fee may apply. For Indian Railways, changing the passenger's name on an e-ticket is not permitted online; you must cancel and rebook. However, for tickets booked at a counter, it's possible to transfer the ticket to a close family member (like a parent, sibling, or spouse) by making a written request at a reservation office at least 24 hours before departure, with required proof of relationship.
