The allure of a winter road trip is undeniable—misty mornings, crisp air, and landscapes transformed by snow or soft sunlight. But cold weather brings challenges. Smart route selection is the key to a safe and memorable journey.
Your Pre-Trip Winter Checklist
Before you even think about
the playlist, your car needs some attention. Winter driving, especially in hilly areas, demands a vehicle in top condition. Start with the essentials: get your battery, brakes, and heating system checked. Cold weather can reduce battery efficiency and you'll need a reliable heater and defogger for clear visibility. Tyres are your single most important connection to the road. Ensure they have adequate tread and are inflated to the correct pressure; cold air can cause pressure to drop. For snowy routes, all-season or winter tyres are a wise investment. Pack an emergency kit containing a first-aid kit, torch, blankets, water, and non-perishable snacks. Finally, always check the latest weather forecasts and road advisories from local authorities before you start.
The Classic Snowscape: Manali to Solang Valley
For many, a winter road trip means snow, and the short drive from Manali to Solang Valley in Himachal Pradesh is the perfect introduction. This route offers a stunning winter wonderland experience without extreme difficulty. The journey is lined with snow-dusted pine trees and offers spectacular views. However, its popularity means it can get crowded. Heavy snowfall can lead to significant traffic jams and temporary road closures. The road beyond Solang Valley, towards the Atal Tunnel, often has restrictions and may require a 4x4 vehicle. It's crucial to start your day early, as authorities may restrict vehicle movement in the morning and evening due to icy conditions. Always heed police advice and be prepared to turn back if conditions are deemed unsafe.
The Quieter Climb: Shimla to Narkanda
If you want snow without overwhelming crowds, the drive from Shimla to Narkanda is an excellent choice. At about 65 kilometres, it’s a manageable trip that takes you through beautiful deodar forests. Narkanda receives moderate to heavy snowfall and remains connected to Shimla throughout winter, making it a reliable option for first-time snow drivers. The main risk here is black ice, especially on shaded bends. Drive slowly, avoid sudden braking, and use your horn on blind corners. Authorities often issue advisories for this route, sometimes recommending 4x4 vehicles or snow chains after heavy snowfall. This route is less about high-altitude drama and more about enjoying a peaceful, snow-covered landscape.
The Desert Sun Route: Jaipur to Jaisalmer
Winter road trips aren't just about snow. The journey from Jaipur to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is ideal between November and February, when the desert sun is gentle and the weather is pleasant. This roughly 560–kilometre drive showcases the state's changing landscape, from the bustling surroundings of Jaipur to the vast, arid expanse of the Thar Desert. The roads are generally well–maintained, making for a smooth drive. A highly recommended stop is Jodhpur, the 'Blue City', located roughly halfway. You can explore Mehrangarh Fort before continuing towards the golden dunes. This route allows you to experience Rajasthan's rich culture, stop at roadside dhabas for authentic food, and witness a spectacular desert sunset—all in comfortable winter temperatures.
The Coastal Cruise: Mumbai to Goa
To trade cold winds for a coastal breeze, the classic Mumbai to Goa road trip is at its absolute best in winter. From October to February, the weather is cool and pleasant, with clear skies perfect for driving and enjoying the beaches. You can choose between two main routes. The NH 48 via Pune and Belgaum is faster and smoother, ideal for those who want a quick, comfortable drive. The more scenic option is the NH 66, which winds along the Konkan coast, offering stunning views of the Arabian Sea, lush ghats, and charming towns like Chiplun and Ratnagiri. This route is slower but rewards you with authentic Konkani cuisine and countless photo opportunities. Whichever path you choose, a winter drive to Goa is a perfect escape from the chill.
