Why Oil Is More Than Just a Lubricant
Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Its primary job is to lubricate moving parts, reducing the immense friction and heat generated inside an engine. But it does more than just that. Good quality oil also helps to keep the engine clean by carrying
away dirt and deposits, prevents corrosion and rust, and acts as a coolant by absorbing heat. When you opt for a budget oil, you might be compromising on these critical functions. Cheap oils can break down faster under pressure and heat, leading to sludge build-up and reduced engine performance.
Mineral, Synthetic, or a Blend?
Not all oils are created equal. You'll typically find three main types on the shelf: mineral, semi-synthetic, and fully synthetic.
Mineral oil is refined from crude petroleum. It's the most affordable option and provides adequate lubrication for older car models and under normal driving conditions. However, it needs to be changed more frequently, typically every 5,000 to 7,000 kilometres.
Fully synthetic oil is created in a lab and chemically modified for superior performance. It offers better protection in extreme temperatures, resists breakdown for longer, and can improve fuel efficiency. This makes it ideal for modern, high-performance engines, but it comes at a higher price. These oils can last for 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres.
Semi-synthetic oil is a blend of the two, offering some of the benefits of synthetic oil at a more moderate price point. It's a popular middle-ground choice for many drivers.
Decoding the Numbers: What Is Viscosity?
The codes like '5W-30' or '10W-40' on an oil pack refer to its viscosity, which is a measure of its thickness or resistance to flow. The first number, followed by a 'W' for 'Winter', indicates how the oil flows in cold weather. A lower number means the oil is thinner and flows more easily on a cold start, providing quicker lubrication. The second number indicates the oil's thickness at the engine's normal operating temperature. A higher number means the oil remains thicker and more protective in hot conditions. India's varied climate, from cool winters to scorching summers and stressful stop-and-go city traffic, makes choosing the right viscosity crucial.
Always Follow the Manufacturer's Lead
The single most important rule is to use the oil recommended in your vehicle's owner's manual. Engineers have determined the precise viscosity grade and oil type that works best with your engine's design and tolerances. Using an oil that's too thick can reduce fuel economy because the engine has to work harder to move its parts. Using an oil that's too thin might not provide enough of a protective film at high temperatures, leading to increased wear and tear. In some cases, using the wrong oil can even lead to damage in other components like catalytic converters.
Look for Quality Certifications
To ensure you're not buying a low-quality product, look for certification marks on the packaging. The two most common are from the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Japanese Automotive Standards Organisation (JASO). The API 'donut' or 'starburst' symbol indicates the oil meets minimum performance standards for gasoline engines. JASO standards are particularly important for motorcycles, as they address the specific needs of wet-clutch systems, ensuring smooth gear shifts and preventing slippage. An oil that meets these standards, even if inexpensive, is a safe choice.
The Real Cost of a 'Cheap' Choice
Saving a few hundred rupees on a basic oil pack might seem smart, but it can lead to significant long-term costs. Poor lubrication from a low-grade or incorrect oil can cause premature engine wear, leading to expensive repairs down the line. Inefficient lubrication also means more friction, which can decrease your vehicle's fuel efficiency, costing you more at the pump. Ultimately, an oil change is one of the least expensive parts of vehicle maintenance, but it has one of the biggest impacts on your engine's health and longevity.
