The 'One Hand Bag' Rule Is Now Strictly Enforced
The most significant recent change for Indian domestic and international travellers is the strict enforcement of the 'one hand baggage' policy by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). While the rule itself isn't new, its rigorous application at airport
security checkpoints is. Passengers in economy class are generally permitted one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to 7 kg. What catches many travellers off guard is that a personal item, such as a handbag, small backpack, or laptop bag, must now often be consolidated into this single piece of luggage before security screening. Previously, carrying a small trolley bag alongside a separate laptop bag was common practice, but flyers should now be prepared to fit all their cabin essentials into one bag to avoid being asked to repack at the gate or check in the extra item.
Know Your Checked Baggage Allowance
For domestic travel within India, the standard checked baggage allowance on most economy class tickets is 15 kg. However, this is not a universal rule and depends heavily on the airline and the specific fare family you purchase. For example, airlines like Air India and IndiGo offer different tiers of economy fares, where 'Lite' or 'Value' tickets may include a 15 kg allowance, while 'Flexi' fares can offer up to 25 kg. It is crucial to verify the allowance mentioned on your ticket at the time of booking. No single checked bag can weigh more than 32 kg, a global standard for the safety of baggage handlers. Pre-booking any excess baggage online is almost always significantly cheaper than paying for extra weight at the airport counter.
Power Banks and Electronics: Cabin Only
Rules surrounding electronic items, particularly those with lithium-ion batteries, are a key area of focus for aviation safety. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandates that all power banks and spare lithium-ion batteries must be carried in your cabin baggage only. They are strictly prohibited in checked luggage due to fire risk. There are also limits on the capacity of these power banks, with most airlines capping it at 100 watt-hours (Wh) without special permission. Laptops, cameras, and other personal electronic devices are best carried in your hand luggage to prevent damage and to comply with security procedures, which often require them to be screened separately.
What About International Flights?
For international travellers, baggage rules can differ significantly. While the strictly enforced 'one hand bag' rule still applies for flights departing from India, checked baggage allowances are generally more generous. On many international routes, particularly to the USA and Canada, the 'piece concept' is used, where an economy passenger might be allowed one or two bags, each weighing up to 23 kg. For those arriving in India, there's good news from a customs perspective. The Baggage Rules, 2026, have increased the general duty-free allowance for returning Indian residents to ₹75,000. Additionally, passengers aged 18 and over can now bring in one laptop duty-free, over and above this limit.
Practical Tips for Smooth Travels
To ensure your journey is smooth, a little preparation goes a long way. First, always double-check the specific baggage allowance on your ticket or the airline's official website before you pack. Consider investing in a small digital luggage scale to weigh your bags at home and avoid surprises. When it comes to hand luggage, opt for a bag with smart compartments that can accommodate your electronics and personal items, making consolidation at the airport easier. If you know you'll be over the limit, pre-purchase your extra baggage online at least a few hours before your flight for the best rates. Finally, remember that while general rules are set by bodies like BCAS and DGCA, final enforcement on the day of travel lies with the airline and airport security staff.
