The Autumn Advantage: A Post-Monsoon Paradise
While many know Sohra (formerly Cherrapunji) as one of the wettest places on earth, the real travel secret lies in visiting during the post-monsoon autumn months of October and November. This period offers the best of both worlds: the landscape, freshly
nourished by months of rain, is at its most vibrant and green. The waterfalls, still fed by the saturated plateau, are powerful and majestic, yet the torrential downpours have ceased. This makes it the ideal time for trekking and exploration, with comfortable temperatures and far fewer tourists than in peak season. The trails are drier and safer, and the frequent monsoon fog that can obscure views gives way to crisp, clear weather, allowing for unobstructed panoramas of the region's dramatic landscapes.
A Cascade of Wonders: Sohra's Waterfall Circuit
Autumn is the perfect time to witness Sohra's legendary waterfalls. Topping the list is Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, dropping from a height of over 1,100 feet into a stunning turquoise pool. The clear autumn weather often provides a perfect, mist-free view of this giant cascade. Nearby, the Dainthlen Falls offers a different experience. Here, you can walk across a wide, flat rock bed, scarred with fascinating potholes, to the very edge where the river plunges over a cliff. For the adventurous, a visit to Wei Sawdong Falls is a must. This unique, three-tiered waterfall cascades into brilliant blue pools, creating a scene that looks like a natural infinity pool. Reaching the base involves a steep but rewarding trek down a series of bamboo ladders, best attempted in the drier post-monsoon season.
Walking on Living Architecture: The Root Bridges
Meghalaya’s most incredible marvels are the Jingkieng Jri, or living root bridges, a testament to the ingenuity of the Khasi people. These are not built, but grown, by guiding the aerial roots of the Ficus elastica tree across rivers. Over decades, these roots strengthen and intertwine to form sturdy, living walkways that get stronger with time. The most famous of these is the Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. Reaching it requires a significant trek, descending roughly 3,500 stone steps from the village of Tyrna. The journey, which takes about two hours one way, leads you through dense forests and across swaying suspension bridges. The reward is the unforgettable sight of this two-tiered, moss-covered bridge and the chance to take a dip in the crystal-clear natural pools beneath it.
Offbeat Secrets and Local Flavours
To truly get off the beaten path, look beyond the main attractions. Explore the Arwah Cave, which is less crowded than the popular Mawsmai Cave and contains fascinating fossils of ancient marine life embedded in its walls. For a different perspective on the root bridges, seek out lesser-known ones like the Umkar Root Bridge. Hiring a local guide can unlock hidden trails to waterfalls not found on official maps. No trip is complete without sampling the local Khasi cuisine. Be sure to try Jadoh, a flavourful rice dish cooked with meat, and Dohneiiong, a rich pork curry made with black sesame seeds. You can find these authentic dishes at small roadside eateries in Sohra or on the way from Shillong, particularly in the village of Mylliem.
Essential Travel Tips for an Autumn Trip
To reach Sohra, the most common route is to fly into Guwahati, Assam, and then take a taxi to Shillong, Meghalaya's capital (a 3-4 hour drive). Sohra is another 2-3 hour drive from Shillong. It’s best to hire a local taxi for sightseeing, as drivers are familiar with the routes and road conditions. For the treks to the living root bridges and waterfalls like Wei Sawdong, sturdy shoes with good grip are non-negotiable. It's also wise to start your treks early in the morning to avoid midday heat. While autumn is drier, the weather can be unpredictable, so packing a light waterproof jacket is always a good idea. Finally, carry enough cash, as digital payments are not widely available in the more remote villages.
