Understanding the Annual Travel Surge
The period between October and November marks one of the largest annual human migrations in India. Families reunite for Diwali, the festival of lights, and Chhath Puja, a major festival particularly for people from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar
Pradesh. This results in an overwhelming demand for train tickets, with reservations filling up months in advance. Regular services are often stretched to their limits, creating a need for additional capacity to ensure people can get home for the celebrations. To address this predictable but massive rush, Indian Railways strategically deploys 'Festival Special' trains every year. These services are planned across various zones to connect major metropolitan hubs with states that see a high influx of travellers.
Focus on High-Demand Corridors
The bulk of the special services are concentrated on corridors with the heaviest traffic. Northern Railway, Western Railway, and Eastern Railway have announced numerous trains catering to passengers travelling from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, and Chandigarh towards destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Key routes include Delhi to Patna, Varanasi, and Ayodhya; Mumbai to Lucknow and Gorakhpur; and services connecting Punjab with eastern UP and Bihar. For instance, the Northern Railway is operating 24 festival special trains that pass through Ambala Cantonment alone, a key transit point for Bihar-bound passengers. These trains often include a mix of coach types, such as AC, Sleeper, and General unreserved classes, to cater to different passenger needs.
Vande Bharat Joins the Festive Fleet
In a significant move to enhance passenger comfort and speed, Indian Railways has also deployed special Vande Bharat Express services on the busy New Delhi-Patna route. This tri-weekly service is scheduled to run from late October through November to specifically cater to the Diwali and Chhath Puja rush. The semi-high-speed train, composed of all chair-car coaches, will connect the national capital with Patna, stopping at key stations like Kanpur Central, Prayagraj, and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction. This offers a faster and more comfortable travel option for those willing to book a seat on the premium service, reducing the journey time significantly compared to conventional express trains.
How to Book and Plan Your Journey
Booking for these special trains is available through the official IRCTC website, the mobile app, and Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. It's important for passengers to note that these are often designated as 'Special Fare' trains, meaning the ticket prices may be higher than on regularly scheduled services. Given the high demand, seats on these special trains are also expected to fill up quickly. Railway officials advise passengers to plan their travel well in advance and book tickets as soon as reservations open. To stay updated, travellers can use the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app or the railway helpline number 139 for the latest information on train schedules, delays, and platform numbers. Announcements are also regularly made at major stations to keep passengers informed about these special services.
