A Gilded Footpath in the City of Gold
Dubai is preparing to launch what it calls the world's first and longest 24-carat gold walkway, with an expected opening before the end of 2026. According to officials, the project is slated to be ready within the next two months. This unique attraction
will be located in the Dubai Gold District in Deira, an area already famous for its countless jewellery shops and bustling gold trade. The plan is to create a path where visitors can literally stroll along a surface made of gold, offering an unparalleled photo opportunity and a new reason to visit the historic trading hub. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated that the walkway would offer a 'distinctive experience' for both residents and tourists.
The Vision Behind the Gleam
This project is more than just a lavish spectacle; it's a strategic move to merge tourism with trade. The primary goal is to attract more visitors to the Gold District and reinforce Dubai's global reputation as a centre for the gold and jewellery industry. The walkway is part of a broader revitalisation effort for the Deira area, which saw the launch of the expanded Dubai Gold District in January 2026. This commercial zone already hosts over 1,000 retailers dealing in everything from gold bullion to perfumes and luxury watches. By creating a must-see attraction, the district hopes to boost foot traffic for its retailers and support its ambition to host the largest gold and jewellery exhibition in the Middle East.
A City Built on Superlatives
A golden walkway fits perfectly within Dubai's well-established playbook of building audacious, record-breaking attractions. This is the city that gave the world the 828-metre-tall Burj Khalifa, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel with its 24-karat gold interiors, and the man-made Palm Jumeirah archipelago. Novelty is a key part of its tourism strategy. The announcement of the gold path notably came on the sidelines of an event celebrating another record: the world's heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings, weighing over 16 kilograms, which are now on permanent display in the city. The gold walkway is the logical next step in a long tradition of creating tangible symbols of luxury and ambition that capture the world's imagination.
From Concept to Reality
While the announcement has generated significant buzz, specific details about the walkway's construction remain scarce. Officials have not yet released information regarding its exact length, the total amount of gold to be used, or the projected cost. The term 'walkway' suggests it may be a path featuring gold elements rather than being solid gold, but developers are keeping the precise design under wraps for now. However, the timeline appears firm, with multiple reports pointing to a launch within two months, before the close of 2026. The project is being driven by the Dubai Gold District as a key feature of its commercial expansion, which has already seen a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices this year.
