Prepare with the Master List
The single biggest time-waster during booking is typing passenger details. The IRCTC portal has a powerful feature called the 'Master List' to solve this. By navigating to 'My Profile' and selecting 'Add/Modify Master List', you can pre-save the details of all frequent
travellers, including their name, age, gender, berth preference, and ID card information. You can add up to 20 passengers to this list. When booking, especially during the frantic Tatkal window, you can add passengers with a single click instead of typing everything manually, saving you crucial seconds that often make the difference between a confirmed ticket and the waiting list.
Choose Your Payment Method Wisely
The payment gateway is where many bookings fail. Net banking can be slow, and waiting for an OTP can cost you your ticket. For the fastest checkout, the IRCTC eWallet is highly recommended. You can pre-load it with funds before booking, and since it often doesn't require an OTP for payment, the transaction is almost instant. The second-best option is UPI. It's generally faster than cards or net banking, requiring only a quick approval on your mobile app. Have your UPI app open and ready to approve the payment request immediately. It's also wise to have a backup payment method ready in case your primary option fails.
Master the Tatkal Timings
Tatkal booking is a race against time, and precision is key. The window for AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A) opens at 10:00 AM, while the window for non-AC classes like Sleeper (SL) and Second Seater (2S) opens at 11:00 AM, one day before the journey. Do not wait until the exact minute to log in. High traffic can slow down the login process. A common strategy is to log in 5-10 minutes early and keep your session active by navigating between pages. Have your journey details entered on the search page, and hit the search button at exactly 10:00:00 AM or 11:00:00 AM.
A Stable Connection is Non-Negotiable
Your booking speed is only as good as your internet connection. A slow or unstable connection, especially during peak hours, is a recipe for failure. It is generally recommended to use a desktop or laptop with a stable wired broadband connection over a mobile browser, as it can offer faster page loading. If you must use a mobile, the official IRCTC Rail Connect app is often faster than the mobile website. Avoid using shared or public Wi-Fi networks, as they can be slow and may lead to session issues. A high-speed, reliable connection ensures pages load quickly and your booking process isn't interrupted.
Know the New and Improved Portal Features
As of mid-2026, IRCTC has rolled out a revamped website aimed at making the booking process smoother. The new system boasts a much higher capacity, able to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a significant jump from the previous 32,000. This increased capacity is designed to reduce lags during peak times like Tatkal. Other user-friendly updates include a cleaner interface with fewer distracting CAPTCHAs and pop-ups, and the ability to see seat availability across all classes on a single screen, eliminating the need to search each class separately. Familiarising yourself with this new, faster layout can give you an edge.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
A few minor adjustments can have a major impact. First, know your station codes. Typing 'NDLS' is much faster than spelling out 'New Delhi'. Second, once you are on the passenger and payment pages, avoid using your browser's back button at all costs, as this can cause errors or log you out. Also, during the Tatkal rush, it's advisable to select 'No Berth Preference'. While a lower berth is nice, specifying a preference adds an extra step for the system to check, and in those few seconds, all tickets might be gone. Focus on securing a confirmed ticket first.
