Even with the right amount of ingredients in the right-sized pan, you can't just set the timer for half the original baking time. While oven temperature should generally remain the same, the baking time needs careful adjustment. A smaller volume of batter will heat through more quickly. A good rule of thumb is to start checking for doneness at about two-thirds of the original time, or even as early as half the time for quick-baking items like cookies. Remember, you can always bake something for longer, but you can never un-bake it. Rely on visual cues—like golden-brown edges and a clean toothpick test—rather than strictly adhering to a recalculated time.

So, how can you set yourself up for success? First, do the math before you start cooking and write down the new measurements. This prevents confusion midway through. Second, use a digital scale for accuracy. For tricky ingredients like eggs, whisk and measure by weight. For leaveners, be as precise as possible.
