The Big Picture: Why Upgrade Gujarat's Rails?
Gujarat is one of India's most industrialised states, with major ports and economic hubs that generate immense freight and passenger traffic. The existing railway network has been operating under significant strain, leading to congestion and slower movement.
To support future growth, Indian Railways has launched a wave of projects aimed at increasing capacity, improving efficiency, and enhancing connectivity both within the state and to the rest of the country. These upgrades are crucial for connecting industrial zones, ports, and tribal areas, ensuring smoother, faster, and more reliable train operations.
Adding Capacity: Doubling and Quadrupling Tracks
One of the most effective ways to increase a rail network's capacity is by adding more tracks to existing routes. Several key doubling projects are underway across Gujarat. Recently, the quadrupling of the Samakhiali-Bhachau section was completed, a critical upgrade for freight movement to and from Kandla and Mundra ports. In June 2026, the doubling of the 49-km Adipur-Bhuj section in Kutch was approved at a cost of ₹493 crore, a move expected to add capacity for two additional passenger trains daily and 12 million tonnes of freight annually. Other major projects include doubling the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line and adding third and fourth lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, a vital part of the Delhi-Mumbai corridor. These projects are designed to decongest busy routes and improve punctuality for both passenger and goods trains.
Forging New Paths: New Lines and Gauge Conversion
Beyond upgrading existing infrastructure, new railway lines are being laid to connect previously underserved regions. The Jobat-Tanda Road new rail line, part of the Chhota Udepur-Dhar project, is set to connect remote tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national network. A proposal for a new Sarkhej-Dholera-Bhavnagar line is also under consideration to support the rapidly developing Dholera Smart City. In addition, gauge conversion projects, such as the one on the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar section, are upgrading older lines to modern broad-gauge standards, allowing for seamless train movement across the network. A significant Rail Over Rail flyover at Kosamba will also provide seamless connectivity for the Kosamba-Umrapada gauge conversion section, avoiding surface crossings with the busy main line and the Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The Crown Jewel: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail
The most talked-about project is undoubtedly the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, popularly known as the bullet train. This 508-km line will feature 12 stations and aims to slash travel time between the two financial hubs. As of September 2026, the project has made substantial progress, with viaduct construction completed over 365 km and significant work on bridges, tunnels, and stations underway. The first trial run is anticipated around August 2027, with the Surat-Bilimora section targeted for commissioning in the coming year. While a full launch may take until 2028, the project is advancing rapidly, with the main transit hub in Ahmedabad nearing completion. It represents a monumental leap in India's railway technology and is expected to stimulate economic development all along the route.
Boosting Freight: The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
A game-changer for Gujarat's logistics sector is the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Recently, three key sections were dedicated to the nation, making the entire corridor fully operational. This high-capacity freight-only network provides direct connectivity to major ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), enabling much faster movement of cargo. By separating freight and passenger traffic, the WDFC not only speeds up the transport of goods but also frees up capacity on the existing main lines, which will improve the punctuality and speed of passenger trains. The corridor is set to significantly reduce logistics costs and decongest Mumbai's busy rail network.
