The New Reality of Lounge Access
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was a standout feature on many Indian credit cards, even entry-level ones. It was a simple way for banks to attract new customers. However, as passenger traffic has surged and more people began using the
perk, the costs for banks have mounted. Issuers pay a fee to lounge operators for every cardholder who enters. To manage these rising expenses, banks like HDFC, ICICI, and Axis have shifted their strategy. They are now converting lounge access from a standard feature into a reward for active, spending customers. This ensures the benefit is reserved for those who provide more value to the bank through regular card usage.
Understanding the Spending Conditions
The new rules for lounge access primarily revolve around spending thresholds, which can be structured in a couple of ways. The most common model requires you to spend a certain amount in one calendar quarter to unlock complimentary lounge visits in the next quarter. For instance, ICICI Bank requires a spend of around ₹35,000 in a quarter on many of its cards to qualify for access in the subsequent quarter. HDFC Bank has similar rules for popular cards like the Regalia series, setting a spend target of ₹60,000 in a calendar quarter. It's crucial to understand whether your bank uses a calendar quarter (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, etc.) or your specific card's anniversary cycle for these calculations, as this affects when you need to meet the spending goals.
How to Track Your Progress
Staying on top of your spending is now essential to avoid being turned away at the lounge entrance. Most banks have made it relatively easy to monitor your progress. The first place to check is your bank’s official mobile app or net banking portal. Many now feature a dedicated section that tracks your spending towards specific benefits like lounge access or fee waivers. Your monthly credit card statement is another reliable source. It will show your total spends for the billing cycle, which you can add up to see if you are on track to meet the quarterly requirement. If you can't find a dedicated tracker, don't hesitate to call your bank’s customer service for clarity on your current status and the specific spending requirements for your card.
Which Cards Are Primarily Affected?
While super-premium cards often retain unconditional lounge access, it's the entry-level and mid-tier cards that have seen the most significant changes. For example, some Axis Bank co-branded cards have removed domestic lounge access entirely. RuPay Platinum debit cards lost their complimentary lounge access benefit in April 2026, while RuPay Select cards moved to a spend-based model, often requiring a minimum spend of ₹5,000 per quarter. Cards like the Scapia Federal Bank card require a minimum monthly spend of ₹5,000 to unlock unlimited domestic access, while the IDFC First Select card requires a ₹20,000 monthly spend for its quarterly visits. These examples show a clear trend: the more accessible the card, the more likely it is to have a spending condition attached to its perks.
Smart Strategies to Meet Your Spend Target
Meeting a quarterly spend target of ₹35,000 or more might seem daunting, but it doesn't mean you have to overspend. The key is to be strategic. Start by consolidating your regular expenses onto the one card you want to retain the lounge benefit on. This includes utility bills, mobile recharges, groceries, and fuel. If you have any large, planned purchases like electronics or travel bookings, channel them through that specific card. Using your card for online shopping and food delivery services can also quickly add to your spending total. The goal is to route your existing, planned expenditure through the right card, rather than creating new debt just to meet a threshold.
What Happens If You Miss the Target?
If you fail to meet the spending requirement in a given quarter, your complimentary lounge access will simply be paused for the following quarter. You won’t be able to enter the lounge for free. However, the benefit isn't usually lost forever. Once you meet the spending threshold in a subsequent quarter, your access will be reinstated for the quarter that follows. If you find yourself at the airport without complimentary access, your only options are to pay the walk-in rate, which is typically between ₹1,000 and ₹2,500 per person, or use another card that does have access. This is why it’s critical to check your eligibility before you head to the airport.
