Why This List Is Essential
Indian Railways is operating a record number of special train trips between April and July 2026 to handle the surge in passenger traffic during school holidays and festivals. Central Railway is a major contributor, running thousands of special services
from key hubs like Mumbai and Pune. These trains are crucial for reducing waiting lists and providing confirmed travel options on high-demand routes. For students heading home after exams or families planning vacations, this list is an indispensable tool for securing a seat on crowded corridors connecting Maharashtra with states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, and more.
Key Routes from Mumbai (CSMT, LTT, Dadar)
Major terminals in Mumbai are the starting points for numerous special services. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Dadar are dispatching trains to various parts of the country. Key services include weekly and bi-weekly trains to destinations like Madgaon (Goa), Nagpur, Gorakhpur, Ballia, Banaras, and Chennai. For instance, the CSMT-Madgaon weekly special (01171) runs on Thursdays, while a bi-weekly special connects LTT to Banaras (01073) on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are also daily specials to high-traffic destinations like Gorakhpur and Danapur, providing consistent travel options.
Special Services Originating from Pune
Pune has also been allocated a significant number of special trains to cater to the holiday rush. Central Railway is operating several services connecting Pune with cities in North India and other parts of Maharashtra. Notable trains include the daily Pune-Danapur Special (01449/01450) and the weekly Pune-Nagpur Superfast Special (01457/01458), which runs until mid-July. Another important service is the daily special between Pune and Kolhapur (01023/01024), providing enhanced connectivity within the state. Many of these services have halts at Hadapsar instead of Pune station for operational reasons, so passengers should check their boarding points carefully.
Connecting to North and East India
A primary focus of this special train schedule is to improve connectivity to states with high passenger demand, such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Trains like the Dadar-Ballia Tri-Weekly Special (01025) and the Dadar-Gorakhpur special running four days a week (01027) are designed to handle this traffic. These services often halt at key stations like Kalyan, Igatpuri, Nashik Road, Bhusaval, Itarsi, and Prayagraj, ensuring connectivity for passengers from various towns along the route. The extension of services on routes like Barauni-New Delhi and Patna-Howrah further helps manage the flow of migrant workers, students, and families during the summer.
How to Book and Important Tips
Booking for these special trains is available at all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and online via the IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and mobile app. It is advisable to book tickets well in advance, as these trains fill up quickly. Bookings typically open 60 days before the date of the journey. Passengers should always double-check the train schedule, including departure and arrival times, and running days before planning their journey. As these are special services, they may run on specific dates and often have special fares. Always check for the latest updates on the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app for any changes.
