Its flagship YUVIKA (YUva VIgyani KAryakram) or 'Young Scientist Programme' is a two-week residential course for school students, designed to give them a basic understanding of space technology and science. Functioning under the Department of Space, IIST offers specialised undergraduate programmes like Aerospace Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering (Avionics). Admission is highly competitive and is based on performance in the JEE Advanced exam. The key advantage of IIST is its unique absorption policy, where exceptional graduates who meet the required academic performance criteria are eligible for direct placement as scientists or engineers at various ISRO centres. While IIST offers a direct path, it is by no means the only one. A Bachelor's degree (B.E. or B.Tech) from other premier institutions is a very common route into the space sector. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Pixxel are now actively hiring for roles in launch vehicle development, satellite manufacturing, and data analytics. This burgeoning private ecosystem offers dynamic, fast-paced environments and competitive salaries, creating thousands of new jobs.
