The 30-Day Visa Exemption Rule
One of the biggest attractions for Indian passport holders is Phu Quoc's special visa policy. You can enter and stay on the island for up to 30 days without needing a visa. However, this fantastic perk comes with strict conditions. The exemption only
applies if you fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport from a country outside of Vietnam, such as India, Thailand, or Malaysia. You must also show proof of an onward ticket out of Phu Quoc to another international destination within that 30-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry. This rule is perfect for a dedicated island holiday, but it does not permit travel to mainland Vietnam.
When You Need a Vietnam E-Visa
If your travel plans include visiting other parts of Vietnam like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, either before or after your time in Phu Quoc, you must apply for a Vietnam e-visa in advance. Indian citizens are not eligible for visa-free entry to mainland Vietnam. The e-visa is the most recommended route for most travellers. You can apply for it online through the official Vietnamese immigration portal. The process typically takes about three to five working days. The e-visa allows for stays of up to 90 days and can be issued for single or multiple entries, giving you the flexibility to explore the entire country. Even if you only plan to visit Phu Quoc, some advisories suggest getting an e-visa anyway to avoid complications in case of emergencies that require you to travel to the mainland.
Getting to Phu Quoc from India
While there may not always be direct, non-stop flights from India, reaching Phu Quoc is straightforward with one-stop options. Several airlines operate flights from major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai, with layovers in Southeast Asian hubs such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Ho Chi Minh City. If you are using the visa exemption, ensure your connecting flight does not require you to clear immigration in mainland Vietnam. Check with your airline to confirm that your baggage will be checked through to Phu Quoc and that you can remain in the international transit area. Flight prices can vary significantly, so it is wise to book in advance, especially during the peak season.
Best Time to Visit
Phu Quoc's weather is divided into two main seasons: dry and rainy. The best time to visit for ideal beach weather is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect clear blue skies, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and sightseeing. The rainy season lasts from May to October. While you can find significant discounts on hotels and flights during this period, be prepared for daily downpours and rougher seas. The shoulder months of late October and early May can offer a good balance of decent weather and lower prices.
Where to Stay and What to Do
Phu Quoc offers a wide range of accommodation to suit every budget. For first-time visitors, the Long Beach area near Duong Dong town is a popular choice, offering numerous hotels, restaurants, and easy access to the famous night market. The northern part of the island is known for its luxurious resorts and tranquil nature, while the south boasts some of the most beautiful beaches like Sao Beach. Beyond the beaches, don't miss a ride on the world's longest sea-crossing cable car, explore the dense jungles of Phu Quoc National Park, or visit a local fish sauce factory to learn about the island's most famous export.
Currency, Payments, and Practical Tips
The official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). While US dollars are sometimes accepted in major tourist establishments, it's best to use VND for daily expenses. Currency exchange counters are available at the airport and in Duong Dong town. Credit cards are widely accepted in larger hotels, resorts, and restaurants, but you will need cash for smaller local eateries and markets. It's also a good idea to keep a copy of your passport and return flight ticket handy for immigration. Lastly, be aware of your passport's safety, as there have been instances of travellers losing them, which can cause significant issues.
