occurs when your body loses excessive water and salt through sweat, causing your internal temperature to rise. Contrast water therapy (CWT), also known as hot/cold immersion therapy, is a recovery technique that involves alternating between hot and cold water. When you switch to cold water, your blood vessels narrow, a process known as vasoconstriction, which helps reduce swelling and inflammation. Here’s a common protocol: Start with a 3-minute immersion in warm water, then immediately switch to a 1-minute immersion in cold water. The hot water should be warm but not scalding (around 35-45°C), while the cold water should be between 10-15°C. Repeat this hot-cold cycle three to five times, always finishing with a cold immersion to maximize the reduction of inflammation. For urban runners focusing on leg recovery, using two buckets deep enough to submerge your legs to the knee is a highly effective and practical approach.
Safety and When to Be Cautious
While generally safe, contrast water therapy isn't for everyone. The primary risk involves using water that is either too hot or too cold, which can damage the skin. It's also important to avoid this therapy if you have certain medical conditions. People with heart issues, high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis, or significant circulatory problems should consult their doctor before trying it. It's also advised to avoid CWT on open wounds or acute injuries that are less than 48-72 hours old, as the heat can sometimes increase initial inflammation.
