Why This Major Disruption Is Happening
The Northern Railway has scheduled a 36-day power and traffic block at the Chandigarh Railway Station, running from September 10 to October 15, 2026. This extensive block is necessary to facilitate major upgrades as part of the station's ongoing redevelopment
by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Key construction activities include erecting a new through-roof structure and safely dismantling the girders of the old foot-overbridge. To minimise the impact, the work has been strategically divided into three 12-day phases, with each phase targeting different railway lines and platforms within the station.
Cancellations, Diversions, and Short-Terminations Explained
While the headline notes 54 changes, this number specifically refers to the train trips that will now short-originate or short-terminate at Ambala Cantonment instead of Chandigarh. The total impact is far greater, with official announcements confirming that 12 train services will be fully cancelled throughout the 36-day period, resulting in a total of 442 cancelled individual trips. This includes key daily services like the Chandigarh-Amritsar Express and the Chandigarh-Firozpur Express. Passengers holding tickets for these trains will need to make entirely new travel arrangements.
Ambala Becomes a Key Hub
A significant number of long-distance trains that previously served Chandigarh will now have their journeys curtailed at Ambala Cantonment. This means passengers travelling to Chandigarh on these services will have to de-board at Ambala and arrange for alternative transport, such as buses or taxis, for the final leg of their journey. Likewise, those starting their journey from Chandigarh on these trains will need to travel to Ambala to board them. Affected services include popular trains like the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath (12983/12984) and the Ramnagar-Chandigarh Express.
Platform Changes and Temporary Halts
Even for trains that continue to operate from Chandigarh, passengers must remain vigilant. A total of 76 trains will see their platforms changed at various points during the three phases of the block. This includes premium services like the Shatabdi Express and Vande Bharat Express, which may depart from or arrive at different platforms than their usual ones. To help manage the passenger rush and provide some relief, the railways have announced a temporary additional halt at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) for several long-distance trains, including the Sambalpur-Jammu Tawi Express and the Dehradun-Amritsar Express.
