A Welcome Relief for Festive Travellers
To manage the immense passenger rush during the upcoming festive period of Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, Central Railway has announced a massive rollout of 418 special train services. These services are designed to ease the burden on regular trains
and provide more options for the millions of people travelling from Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur to their hometowns across the country. The announcement is a crucial lifeline for those planning their journeys between October and November 2026, a period that typically sees train bookings get exhausted within minutes of opening.
Connecting Mumbai to Key Destinations
These special services will connect Mumbai's major terminals, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), to high-demand destinations. A significant number of services are being directed towards states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to cater to the Chhath Puja rush, with special trains to Gorakhpur, Banaras, and Mau. For instance, 64 daily special services will run between CSMT and Gorakhpur. Additionally, there are weekly and bi-weekly trains scheduled for southern cities like Chennai and Bengaluru, as well as services to other parts of Maharashtra, including Nagpur, Kolhapur and Latur.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains has already commenced in a phased manner, starting from September 27, 2026. It's crucial for passengers to note that booking dates may differ for various trains. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in), all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, and mobile apps like RailOne. These special services operate with special charges, so fares may be higher than regular trains. Railway officials have advised passengers to book their tickets early to avoid last-minute hassles and to ensure they travel with valid tickets.
A Strategic Guide for Confirmed Seats
Securing a confirmed ticket during the festive season requires more than just luck; it needs a strategy. Since these special trains are announced closer to the travel date, they offer a second chance to those who missed out on regular bookings. It is advisable to keep checking the IRCTC website and the official social media handles of Central Railway for announcements on new services. For detailed information on train timings, halts, and coach compositions, passengers should consult the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) portal or app before their journey. Being prepared with passenger details and using digital wallets for quick payments on the IRCTC app can also increase your chances of getting a confirmed ticket during the high-traffic booking window.
