Understand the Enemy: Humidity
The core challenge during the monsoon is the high moisture content in the air. When humidity is high, your sweat doesn't evaporate easily. This traps sweat, oil, and environmental pollutants on your skin's surface, creating a perfect breeding ground for
bacteria and clogged pores. This can lead to a variety of issues, including acne breakouts, a greasy appearance, and even fungal infections in skin folds. Your skin may feel oily on the surface but can still be dehydrated underneath. The goal isn't to strip the skin but to rebalance it with a lighter, more breathable approach.
Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
Washing your face twice a day is crucial to remove the grime that accumulates in humid weather. However, it's important not to over-wash or use harsh, stripping cleansers. Doing so can damage your skin's natural barrier, prompting it to produce even more oil to compensate. Opt for a gentle, pH-balanced gel or foaming cleanser. Ingredients like salicylic acid can be beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin as they help to dissolve oil and keep pores clear without being overly aggressive.
Exfoliate Mindfully
Gentle exfoliation one to two times a week can be a game-changer during the monsoon. It helps to slough away dead skin cells that can otherwise trap oil and lead to dullness and breakouts. You can choose a mild physical scrub with fine granules or a chemical exfoliant containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs). AHAs work on the skin's surface, while BHAs like salicylic acid are oil-soluble and can clean deeper inside the pores. The key is not to overdo it; excessive scrubbing can cause irritation and damage your skin's protective barrier.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common mistake to skip moisturiser when your skin feels sticky or oily. The humidity in the air is not the same as hydration within your skin. In fact, skipping moisturiser can weaken your skin barrier, leading to dehydration and triggering more oil production to compensate. The solution is to switch from heavy creams to a lightweight, non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) formula. Look for gel-based or water-based moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which provide hydration without feeling heavy or greasy.
Sunscreen is Still Non-Negotiable
Don't let cloudy skies fool you into skipping sunscreen. According to dermatologists, up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds, causing tanning, premature ageing, and long-term skin damage. Protecting your skin is essential every single day, rain or shine. For the monsoon, choose a lightweight, gel-based or fluid sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. A non-comedogenic and matte-finish formula will feel more comfortable on the skin and won't contribute to that greasy feeling.
Embrace Targeted Ingredients
Incorporating specific active ingredients into your routine can help tackle common monsoon skin issues. Niacinamide is a superstar for humid weather; it helps regulate oil production, minimise the appearance of pores, and reduce redness. Hyaluronic acid provides weightless hydration, while ceramides help repair and support the skin's natural barrier. For breakouts, salicylic acid or tea tree oil can be effective spot treatments due to their antibacterial properties. Adding a Vitamin C serum can also help brighten a dull complexion and provide antioxidant protection.
