Marshrutkas typically leave when they are full, with services running throughout the day. The journey costs around 50 GEL and takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, including the border crossing. While it’s the most budget-friendly option, be prepared for a potentially cramped ride with limited luggage space. It’s a truly local experience, offering a no-frills, direct route to your destination. In Yerevan, you'll likely arrive at the Kilikia Bus Station, from where you can take a local taxi to your accommodation.
Option 2: The Scenic Overnight Train
For those who prioritise comfort over speed, the overnight train is an excellent alternative. The train journey takes about 10 hours, connecting Tbilisi and Yerevan while you sleep, saving you the cost of one night's accommodation. The service runs on a seasonal schedule, often operating every other night in the off-season and daily during the summer peak. You can choose between different classes, from the cheapest 'platskartny' (open-plan dormitory) to more private 'kupe' (4-berth) and first-class (2-berth) compartments. The border crossing is handled by officials who board the train and check passports in your compartment, making it a hassle-free process in the middle of the night. While more expensive than a marshrutka, the train offers better comfort, more space, and a unique social travel experience.
Option 3: Shared Taxis for Speed and Comfort
If you're looking for a balance between the low cost of a marshrutka and the comfort of a private car, a shared taxi is a great middle ground. These are regular cars that take on multiple passengers heading to the same destination. You can often find them at the same bus stations where marshrutkas depart. The main advantage is speed; a shared taxi can complete the journey faster than a minibus. The cost is per seat, and while more expensive than a marshrutka, it is significantly cheaper than a private transfer, especially if you are travelling in a small group. You might have to wait for the car to fill up, but the journey itself is often more comfortable and direct.
Navigating the Sadakhlo-Bagratashen Border
The main land border crossing between Georgia and Armenia is at Sadakhlo (on the Georgian side) and Bagratashen (on the Armenian side). The process is generally straightforward. When travelling by marshrutka, you will disembark at the Georgian checkpoint to get your exit stamp. You must take all your luggage with you. After clearing Georgian immigration, you'll re-board the vehicle, cross a bridge over the Debed River, and then disembark again for Armenian entry procedures. Armenian officials will check your passport and visa. The entire process at the border can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on how busy it is. Just follow the flow of other passengers, and don't worry if your driver moves the vehicle; they will wait for everyone on the other side.
