Dubai, long known as the 'City of Gold', is adding a new, glittering attraction to its famous Gold District. An official announcement has confirmed a 'Path of Gold' is being created, offering tourists an unprecedented and literal golden experience.
A Glimmering New Attraction
Dubai
is preparing to launch a landmark tourist attraction: a walkway made of 24-carat gold. Announced by the Dubai Gold District, this 'Path of Gold' is expected to be the first of its kind in the world and is scheduled to open to the public before the end of 2026. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director within the district, confirmed the project is designed to give residents and tourists a unique opportunity to literally walk on gold. This initiative aims to solidify Dubai's status as a global hub for both gold trading and luxury tourism, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors. The announcement was made during an event that also celebrated two new Guinness World Records for a pair of enormous gold earrings, further cementing the district's reputation for opulence and craftsmanship.
The Vision for the Gold District
The golden walkway is a key feature of the recently launched Dubai Gold District in Deira, a massive development project by Ithra Dubai aimed at revitalizing one of the city's most historic areas. Officially opened in January 2026, the district is a purpose-built destination that consolidates all aspects of the gold and jewellery industry, from retail and wholesale to bullion trading and investment services. The project is not just an extension of the old Gold Souk but a comprehensive reimagining of the area. It blends modern infrastructure with the traditional charm of the souk, featuring shaded, air-conditioned walkways, new retail and office spaces, residential units, and hotels. The goal is to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the cultural heritage that made the Gold Souk a world-famous destination.
What Tourists Can Expect
For tourists, the 'Path of Gold' is more than just a photo opportunity; it is the centrepiece of a transformed district. The Deira Enrichment Project, of which the Gold District is a part, introduces modern amenities to the historic market. Visitors can explore an expanded area with over 295 new retail units, waterfront promenades, and improved access to public transport, including a transit hub that integrates a metro station, bus station, and ample parking. The new extension connects the classic souk to the waterfront, creating a seamless journey through a marketplace that now offers not just gold, but also silver, perfumes, and other goods. This blend of old and new ensures that while the shopping experience is more comfortable and sophisticated, the vibrant, bustling atmosphere of a traditional Arabian market remains.
A Golden Future for Deira
This ambitious project is part of Dubai's broader 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on regenerating the city's older districts. By breathing new life into Deira, the Gold District and its 'Path of Gold' are set to attract a new generation of shoppers and tourists who might have previously spent their time in Dubai's newer malls. The development has already seen a significant rise in new stores and is expected to attract more businesses in the coming year. Beyond the walkway, plans are underway for a massive exhibition centre within the district, intended to host the largest gold and jewellery trade show in the Middle East. These efforts collectively aim to ensure that Deira remains not just a part of Dubai's history, but a vital and growing part of its future.
