Why Autumn is the Perfect Season
The period from October to May is widely considered the best time to visit the Andaman Islands. Specifically, the autumn months of October and November mark the end of the monsoon, leaving the islands incredibly lush and vibrant. The weather is pleasant,
with calmer seas and clear skies, making it ideal for island hopping, beach relaxation, and water sports. This season offers a sweet spot with fewer tourists than the peak period of December to February, allowing for a more intimate and serene experience for couples.
Getting There and Around
Your journey begins with a flight to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair (recently renamed Sri Vijaya Puram), the main entry point to the islands. From Port Blair, you'll need to take a ferry to reach Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island). Several private ferry operators like Makruzz, Green Ocean, and ITT Majestic offer comfortable and fast journeys, typically taking 90 minutes to two hours. It is highly recommended to book these ferry tickets online well in advance, especially during the tourist season, as they sell out quickly. Government ferries are also available but are primarily for locals and can be difficult for tourists to book.
Swaraj Dweep (Havelock): Vibrant Romance
Swaraj Dweep is the more bustling of the two islands and the heart of the tourist experience. For a romantic stay, consider a beachfront resort or a private villa, many of which offer stunning ocean views and direct beach access. The island is home to Radhanagar Beach, often lauded as one of the best beaches in Asia, famous for its breathtaking sunsets and soft white sand – perfect for long, romantic walks. Beyond the beach, you can rent a scooter to explore the island's winding roads and hidden corners, creating your own adventure together. For a memorable evening, many resorts can arrange a private candlelight dinner on the beach.
Shaheed Dweep (Neil): Tranquil Escape
A short ferry ride from Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep offers a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere. This smaller island is perfect for couples looking to slow down and simply enjoy each other's company. The beaches here, such as Laxmanpur Beach, are famous for their stunning sunset views and unique natural rock formations, including a natural bridge. The vibe is less commercial, with a focus on relaxation and nature. You can rent bicycles or a scooter to explore the lush green paddy fields and quaint villages at your own pace. Accommodations here are often nature-focused, providing a peaceful retreat.
Unforgettable Experiences for Two
The Andamans offer a playground of activities for adventurous couples. One of the most popular experiences is scuba diving. Havelock, in particular, has numerous dive centres with certified instructors ready to guide beginners through the vibrant underwater world of coral reefs and colourful fish. For a less intensive but equally magical experience, try sea walking, where you can walk hand-in-hand on the ocean floor. Another unique activity is night kayaking through mangrove forests, where you can witness the mesmerizing glow of bioluminescence with every paddle stroke. Snorkeling at Elephant Beach and enjoying a glass-bottom boat ride are other fantastic ways to explore the rich marine life together.
A Sample Itinerary to Guide You
For a balanced trip, plan for at least 5 to 7 days. A common and effective route is Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock), then to Shaheed Dweep (Neil), and finally back to Port Blair. Consider spending 2-3 nights in Havelock to fully enjoy its beaches and activities without feeling rushed. Follow this with 1-2 nights in Neil for a tranquil contrast. Your first and last nights may need to be in Port Blair to align with flight and ferry schedules. This structure allows you to experience the distinct character of each island while keeping travel manageable.
