The Viral Video and The Annoying Berth
Anyone who has travelled in a 3AC coach knows the struggle of being assigned a berth near the main door. A travel content creator, Dhananjay Kumar, recently posted a video that struck a chord with frequent rail passengers. It compared the layout of conventional
trains, like the Rajdhani Express, with the new Vande Bharat Sleeper prototype. In older coaches, the berths are positioned very close to the entrance, a high-traffic zone plagued by constant movement, the clatter of the door, and conversations from the vestibule, making restful sleep a near impossibility. The video showcases how the Vande Bharat Sleeper directly addresses this long-standing passenger complaint with a thoughtful and practical new layout.
A Lobby for Your Coach
The solution highlighted in the video is surprisingly simple: creating more space. The designers of the Vande Bharat Sleeper have intentionally placed a significant gap between the main sliding entrance door and the first set of berths. This buffer zone effectively creates a small vestibule or lobby area. The practical benefits are immense. It prevents passengers who are boarding, alighting, or simply waiting to use the restroom from crowding the narrow aisle right next to sleeping passengers. This small change drastically reduces noise and physical disturbance, promising a quieter, more peaceful journey for those in nearby berths. Social media users have praised the feature, with some calling for it to be implemented in all trains.
More Than Just Extra Space
This clever use of space is just one part of a broader passenger-centric design philosophy for the Vande Bharat Sleeper. The trains, manufactured by BEML, are engineered from the ground up to enhance comfort and convenience. This includes ergonomically designed berths, improved cushioning, and advanced suspension for a smoother ride with less noise. The coaches also feature sensor-based lighting, modern vacuum toilets, sealed gangways for easier movement between coaches, and automatic doors. These upgrades, from the major engineering systems down to the layout of the entrance, collectively aim to create a travel experience that rivals premium transport services, setting a new benchmark for Indian Railways.
A New Era for Overnight Travel
The Vande Bharat Sleeper project represents a significant step in modernising India's long-distance rail network. Designed to operate on routes between 800 and 1,200 kilometres, these trainsets are built for semi-high-speed travel, capable of reaching 180 km/h in trials. The first prototype was rolled out in 2024, with the inaugural commercial service launching in early 2026. Each 16-coach train can accommodate over 800 passengers across First, Second, and Third AC classes. With features like the Kavach anti-collision system and extensive CCTV surveillance, these trains promise not only a more comfortable but also a safer journey. As more of these sleepers are rolled out, they are set to redefine what passengers can expect from an overnight train trip in India.
